88 Spindle - Speed Sensor Removal

greetings all,

well, as i suspected...rain. oh well however, this gives me another chance to ask another question about rear bearing / hub assembly in my 88. i have looked at he helms manual and it is not all that clear. so, i will asked here to those whom have done this already.

1. i raise the car up on stands and remove the wheels.
2. remove the brakes/calipers.
3. remove the rotor

i have read thread after thread about how next to proceed.

1. do i have to take loose a rear "tie rod" and for what purpose?
2. i realize that i have to remove the u-joint strap to drop the wheel end of
the half shaft. (i will be removing the entire half shaft to do all except the
main drive shaft u-joints.)

***i have concerns as to the speed sensor attached at the wheels. i have also noticed that there are some "teeth" on at near the rear spindle that the speed sensor has something to do with.

1. are these "teeth" attached to or part of the rear spindle?
2. do i have to "fool" with the speed sensor or these "teeth" and in what
way?

i have a helms manual and even my 81 helms left a lot to be desired in diagrams or instruction and i have found some of their directions to have been omitted or wrong as pertaining to my 81.

1. do you recommend i put loc-tite on all the threads i encounter during
reassembly?

yes, i know that but, i was more concerned with the other aspects of my question as to what appears to be "teeth" and the speed sensor at-on-or near the rear spindle. thanks for reply.

This confuses me. You are taking to whole assembly off the car, right. Then, of course you would have to disconnect the tie-rods, along with the support rods.

Yes.

No.

No. Not with aluminum or you'd never get them apart.

Perhaps I didn't get as descriptive as I should have when I created the page, but if you already have the Helms book, as you've stated, you should have no problem understanding. ;)

Yes.

***phew!, thanks for telling me! i have replaced bearings on my 81 before it was totaled and although it was infinitly more work then this, it was simpler. is there an anti-seize compound i should use then?***

If you're only removing the bearing and spindle, you only need to disconnect the support rods at the knuckles; you shouldn't have to remove the tie-rod ends from the knuckle in order to swing it clear enough to remove the spindle.

thanks for reply!.....

yes, that is correct. i kept reading warnings about the speed sensors at the rear wheels and seeing something with "teeth" at or near there that has me in a panic! (still does!). i have not been under the car yet due to constant rain so, i am blind so to speak. so, let me see if i have this staright;
1. raise car and support
2. remove lugs and wheel
3. remove caliper (and nothing else)
4. remove rotor
5. you wrote.."disconnect the support rods at the knuckles"..
(are you refering to a strut rod end such as in an 81 rear end
or is what you are you refering to require a "fork" such as to separate a tie
rod or ball joint?)
6. remove straps holding u-joints and drop half shafts (since i am going to do
the u-joints)
7. remove any cotter pins and large 36mm nut in spindle and lightly tap out of
bearing.
8. remove the 3 torx #5 bolts holding bearing to "flange" and remove bearing.

***is there any support needed or to be applied to the rear "leaf spring".
***what the heck are these teeth i see in the manual at the rear bearing
area?
thanks for your help. this is awkward since i have no "usuable garage to work in and it is constantly raining.

You sound like you're as bad as I am and are reading way too much before you "get out and get under", as they say.

First thing, the speed sensor is not as delicate an instrument as they make it out to be. And there is no adjustment to it; it simply slides into a receiver in the knuckle assembly. The only caveat that you should take note of is not to hammer the thing back in. It may take a little wiggling to get it out if that's what you want to do, say if you wanted to polish the knuckle assembly or something. ;)

It is a bolt and nut assembly; no pickle fork required.

is there any support needed or to be applied to the rear "leaf spring".
How old are you, or how good of shape is your upper body strength? The tension will be all but gone by the time you get to the end of the bolt, but I used a floor jack just to be safe. A C-clamp helps here. ;)

They count. :L

They are the calibrated units used by the sensor to send a speed signal to the ABS system. They are pretty durable, after all, the whole shebang is constantly seeing a lot of road debris.

IT WOULD APPEAR THAT IT IS SIMILAR TO THE REAR STRUT RODS ON AN 81 THAT HAVE THE ALIGHNMENT ADJUSTMENT NEAR THE "GEAR BOX" AND THE OTHER SIDE FASTENS TO THE WHEEL SIDE WITH A NUT AND BOLT TO THE TRAILING ARM ASSEMBLY SO TO SPEAK. THAT WOULD THEN MEAN THAT I WILL HAVE TO SCRIBE MARKS TO PLACE THE ALIGHNMENT BACK TO WHERE IT WAS WHEN I STARTED, CORRECT?***

***UPPER 40'S, FORMER POWER LIFTER, 2ND DEGREE BLACK BELT MARTIAL ARTS..SO, IF I SCREW UP MY CAR, I CAN ALWAYS TURN IT OVER ON IT'S SIDE OR CHOP IT IN HALF!..GRIN. QUESTION; WHICH BOLT, THE ONE IN THE KNUCKLE? I WILL PROBABLY PLACE A FLOOR JACK UNDER THE LEAF JUST IN CASE AS I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT***
