92 convertible automatic

Was cruising down the freeway at about 75mph when my rpms jumped up 800rpm or so like it went out of lock-up. Was cruising to the next exit to get off and check it out when it went back into lock-up, still got off freeway at next exit and checked tranny fluid, seemed kind of high. Backed out of parking spot and put into drive and shifted into drive kinda hard and then wouldn't shift out of first gear. Pulled back around and check tranny fluid again and seemed fine or high. shut car off and it was lightly smoking (just a slight haze) from behind the engine (converter area). let it cool for 20 minutes or so and then tried driving it again and drove it to a friends house 6 miles away in first gear for the first 2 or 3 miles, then all of a sudden it started acting normal, went up into overdrive w/ lock-up. Next stop it wouldn't shift out of first again, so i parked it and now its sitting on a trailer until i decide what to do with it? Any ideas on what the problem is more exactly or how to fix it? How much do you think this is gonna cost me?

Thanks!

Did you see my post under "Transmission??????"

Sure sounds similar.

Hate to say it bud, but sounds like the tranny is giving out. I had the same thing happen on my 92. The problem went away for a while and then the tranny started making loud grinding noises. It finally went and cost $2,500 to rebuild. Mine had about 87k miles on it, so I guess it was time.
