I am a new happy vette owner and am wondering about LT1's and LT4's. I know the difference of power and torque and all that but what I don't know is did they put LT1's in only these years but not those years or was it a sort of option type deal. It's a dumb question to some of you guys out there but I am just trying to get smarter!!! Thanks.

The LT1 used in the C4s was the Gen II chevy small block (Gen I was the original small block of 1955 - 1991 in the Vette). The LT1 was used only from 92 to 96, only 5 years. The LT4 was a one year only engine, 1996. Then came the LS1 as the Gen III engine in 1997 till today.

Oooohhhhh...Thanks Tom. Do you know why LT4 is a one yr. engine? It doesn't seem troublesome. I hate to sound like a kid with the "Why, Why, Why" but knowledge is power. : )

Thanks for the welcome! Unfortunately I don't have my vette with me ( I'm in the Navy, always moving ) but it is safe in the states. So far I've only found two beaut's driving around, '74 t-top and a '78 t-top. They do make me smile though. As soon as I can get back stateside I will post several pics, thats a promise.

LT4 came out because the C5 cat was let out of the bag, so to speak.

They just did it to encourage sales of 96, instead of people waiting til 97 to get the C5.

LT4 is ALL 1996 6speeds, no automatics. GM rated it at 330hp, but dyno results put ~300rwhp which means it actually has about 350hp at the crank. Evidently they underrated it because the 97 was rated initially at 345 for the early LS1.

An LT4 will beat most early C5s, til about 2001 where they win more often, but not Z06s with a decent driver.
