About to buy a C4

I bought a 1989 convertible with 52K mi in Nov. for 12,500. The car was in cherry condition, so 16K is a bit much. From a dealer I wouldn't pay more than 14-14.5. Good luck and remember, there are more out there that can be bought for a better price if they don't budge.

That sounds too high

I recently bought my 1995 for $11K. It has high miles (100K), but is in excellent shape otherwise. It drives great and is very clean ....

Look around on Autotrader and remember that you could save money by buying a car that's farther away from where you live. I ended up renting a car one way and drove 120 miles to pick it up when I bought mine. Rather than overpaying because a car is local to you, look into that. I would even consider flying to another city to get one if it was a better deal. Just be careful about buying a car from out of state because at least here in Florida they charge you an impact fee (they don't call it that anymore, but they still charge it) when you purchase a car out of state.

Also, try "www.peoplefirst.com" for an auto loan. I used them and they were really great!

Mad House!!!!!!!!!

Has everybody gone mad with the price's!

This dealer has nothing to lose with this (pigeon) young lady. If your credit is weak don't buy the vette because it will bankrupt you and you would be lucky to get $6000 for it.

Stay away from it and if you have to find a boy friend with a vette!

For $16,000, l would give you a 96LT1 with 45,000 miles that needs nothing today. And l would feel guilty taking your money.

PASSPASSPASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. This has to be joke and someone is pulling our leg. Right!!!

Uhhhhhh, I think Angel Eyes is MR. Angel Eyes

14K

Angel Eyes,

It all depends on what you really want. Right after I sent the last post I realized I probably paid too much for my 88 35th Edition car, but I did have a lot of work done on it that added to the price. If your dealer will stand by the car, and make any small problems right you might be OK, but I would still think the car should sell for around 10 to 12k tops. The main thing is that you will be happy with your purchase. Someone here once said don't buy the first car you see. Look around and try and find one closer to book if you can. In PA there are lots of Vettes to pick from.

By the way, welcome! There are a lot of great people here, and they are all willing to help you with your questions.

I got my 86' Malcolm conner edition for $3500 (88k miles) 2 mo ago. It only needed a little cleaning up that costed less than a grand. I dont know how i got such a good deal but dealers tend to overcharge.

I have to agree with most others but if the car is truly mint and I mean truly mint(have a mech look at it) $12-13K is not out of the question. The problem is very few early C4 cars are original and pristine. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Check on CollectorCartrader.com A whole slew of C4's to choose from!!! You will find a fair deal on there!! Just put in the year ,price etc and you will find a Vette!!! For 16k you can find a real cherry!Happy shopping and let us know when you get one!

Ok, for one, it is MR. AngelEyes (Didn't anyone here ever see "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly?)

Ok, and here is the second part. I'll try to clear this up a bit.

The car is around $18,900, after tax, title and a 3yr/36k mile warranty is added to the tag price of $15,990. With my trade-in, It brings the cost down to $15, 918 out the door.

Now, the car has new brakes, rotors redone, new clutch, parking brake, new glass top, and a bunch of other little things that were fixed by the dealer. And as far as problems, the only thing I see wrong with the car, is a little paint cracking on the rear bumper, by the license plate area, the driver mirror does not move side to side, and the latch on the console door is broken. Other than that, the car looks 100% perfect.

Now, if I drop the warranty (which I consider unwise), then, after my trade in, the car is only $13,918, out the door.

Now, I went back to the dealer last night, with guns blazin' to try to lower the price, but he seemed pretty firm. I didn't want to get rude with him, but I kept telling him, the car just isn't worth it. He didn't want to hear that though... I guess dealers live in a dream world sometimes.

I'll keep you all posted. I'll know Thursday. Thanks for all the help. I just haven't seen a car this nice, from a dealer... and I'm kinda stuck, because, I need to trade in my current car. And I also need to mention, the car has to be close to me. I don't have the time or effort to go pick one up somewhere.

All of the advice given here was spot-on. Your (Angel Eyes) latest post reads like just a bunch of rationalization to justify buying the car. My opinion is that you've got a lot of things going against you: your age, your credit, your inability (or unwillingness) to travel a bit to find other options, your "need" to unload your current car quickly and your unfamiliarity with Corvettes. I mention your age only because some dealers may be unwilling to consider you a serious buyer.

So, with all these strikes against you, and it seems that you're just dead-set on buying this car, I really don't know what to say. It's too expensive, the dealer is probably going to screw you on the financing, and the car is not perfect (you listed several problems right off the bat, how many more are out there that you haven't found yet?).

There's only one way to spell no.

No.

Or, since you like movie references, how about this one?

Run Forest, run!

Good luck in whatever you do.

Michael

I needed slapped, thanks. Unless I can get this guy low, I'll walk away. Thanks for the reality check.

In fact, I think I'm going to call him and tell him to stuff the car. I've been looking around and have found cooler, possibly better cars, for much less. I just hope that a private seller is willing to wait for a bit, while I try to get money from a bank.

Thanks guys :w

there you go take your time don't rush. that car will sit on the lot for a few months. the market for C4's are very weak right now :( good for you the buyer but bad for us if we want to sell.

keep looking they are out there. here in MD there is atleast 2 96's on the lot where i bought mine and i'm sure no more than 16k at the most. the owner is a corvette fan and only sells nice vettes at a reasonable price.

they are out there you just got to look!

good luck!

Angel Eyes

At least ya gave it a shot man. You went back to the dealer with an extremely educated counter offer, and he refused.
His loss. As others have said, that car will either sit on his lot, or some fool with too much cash on his hands will drive away with it and will drop more cash into it just to keep it running.
Best to keep shopping and start saving.

I will again stress LendingTree.com for financing. They submit your stuff to many lenders and each of them offer you a finance deal. Some may be as high as 10-11%.
But you never know till ya try.

Local banks look at your debt to income ratio. IF that checks out, then they will go for the credit report. Harder to get loans thru them.(in my book)

Keep shopping for a vehicle that meets your current needs as well as projected needs for say, the next 3-4 years.

Best to go thru life with no regrets,
Rain

Hang on -look around-Remember dealers have a way of making cars look great-have a auto-fax run on the car-I paid 14K for my triple ruby '93 and it is in wonderful condition.:w Dennis

I would agree that the price seems a little too high. I waited months until I found the perfect one (which meant staking out Ebay, Autotrader.com, my local newspaper classifieds, etc.). Depending on which year/options/colors you want, be patient. I found a '95 with 55K for $15,800. It was in great shape and was within a few hundred dollars compared to Blue Book (kbb.com).

As far as financing, I would highly recommend Peoplefirst.com. I found them through LendingTree.com. They made the loan go so smoothly and didn't even ask much about the car at all. They based the loan on my credit, which helped since many lenders are iffy about loans on older cars. Take a look at them.

Whatever you go with, good luck!

Good, Bad and Ugly!!

That discribes your situation to a tee.

HEY BLONDIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is the line, not angel eyes unless l'm missing something.

Blondie was Clint Eastwood.

Stratton was the grave that was used to mark the unmarked grave where the money was buried.

Unless you are talking about Lee Van Cleef who was the "bad".

Eli Wallach was the "ugly".

PASS on it and you will thank us forever.

Pa. is loaded with used vette's and the home of two major car auctions where most of the cars come from that sit on dealer's lots.

Alan

p.s. sorry if l thought you were a young lady, l stand to be corrected.

Don't know if this helps........looked at the following cars within the last few weeks-

88 Stick-90k-one owner all papers window sticker-7500-
88 auto-70k-auto-needed leather repair-6800
88-anniversary-100plus k- much redone-7000-
88-convert-auto-70k-nice-8000

I realize your looking at a 40000 mile car but I think its a little pricey. (15000 with a 3000 trade?)

BTW- I went for the Anniversary- Good Luck....Jim
