Accel ignition coil, better then stock?

Unless you're running north of 6500 RPM's, the stock ignition system is fine.

Well, the TPI engine would probably fall out of breath before that rpm range :D

So I cannot expect any benefits then?

How much volts are the stock coil producing?

If I remember right I think the stock HEI wil put out as high as 60k volts but not sure if it does it at high rpm.

I had added an Accel SuperCoil in an old 78 that I had owned and it did raise the idle speed somewhat. But the wires were stock and I had not replaced the cap or rotor. The higher voltage probably helped to deliver a hotter spark to the plugs given the poor condition of the old components.

When I added a new cap, rotor, and wires, the idle speed stayed the same.

If you had a much higher compression motor, larger displacement or running nitrous oxide, then a hotter spark would help. Otherwise for a stock motor, the factory coil will do the job assuming the rest of the components are in good shape.

I like the Accel products. I am running both the 300+ ignition box and the ignition coil. I have a 96 LT4.

If you have one laying around, I would definitely install the coil.

Only you would be able to tell if it helped. If it doesn't do anything, at least you have a newer coil. :upthumbs

SAVE THE WAVE! :w

i think it helps. not sure the extra ponies but it definetly helps! make sure you run a bronze rotor button if not the supercoil will tear them up with in a few months. i run the accel one that is made for the super coil. add some timing and you'll feel the full benefit of the upgraded ignition.
