66 coupe,72 vert,
I have a late 66 coupe 427/425 (L-72), the alternator is the 1100693 37 amp. According to the 1963-1967 Stingray Fact Book all 66 L-72 came from the factory with the 1100696 alternator. I have heard from several sources that the late 66 L-72 also left the factory with the 1100693, can someone please shed some light on this issue for me.

All L-72's required K-66 Transistor Ignition, thus they all had the 696 (42-amp) alternator; the only '66 427 that used the 693 (37-amp) alternator was the 390hp L-36 without Transistor Ignition or A/C. A previous owner must have replaced the original 696 with a 693; the 693 was the "base" alternator in '65-'68 for almost ALL Chevrolet products, and they were very plentiful.

The 696's are EXTREMELY difficult to find - the specialists (like John Pirkle) have a LONG waiting list for customers looking for 696's, as their only application was '65-'68 Corvettes with Transistor Ignition.

Well looks like the search will begin, thanks for the info.

There are already LOTS of restamp 696 alternators out there - most of them not very well done. :)

Soon were going to have to hire experts like yourself to inspect parts before we buy just like we do when checking out a complete car..;LOL
