My 81 volt meter indicates alternator output voltage to be on the high side of 14 volts. I am thinking this may be the root cause responsible for the dim alternator warning light.
Anyone have any information on alternator specifications, especially regarding acceptable output voltage range?

It should be 14.2vdc if everything is working right and the grounding is good. That would be the same for any 12vdc car with engine running.

it sounds to me like the diode trio inside the case has gone south it is not a hard job to replace it and the part is fairly cheap, there are tests in the manuel for checking the diodes it may be an option for you . I would say any thing around 14 volts to 14.8 would fly in my book :upthumbs steve ps check your wiring and connections first

Take it off and to Autozone for a free checkout. Other stores in your area may do the same.

I'd agree with those voltage ranges too.

Chuck........ I upgraded my OEM (65 amp) Alternator to a 85 amp (as the book specifies) and she runs about 14.5 on the dash gauge and right around 14.7 on my VOM meter. The dim light is telling you that you still have a bad alternator or the regulator inside it is bad. Remove it and have it taken to an AutoZone and have them put it on a load and check it. I had to get two before I got a good one. Sometimes they just down rebuild them correctly in whatever third world country they are imported from.

Good Luck............. Nut
