Another Code 32 Question

2016 triple black vert.
Did a search on code 32 and most of what I read were from folks having problems with the car. My 88 runs fine but on long trips it occasionally throws a code 32. Went to BG in May and after about 100 miles it threw a 32. Started and stopped it several times around BG and no codes. But it did the same thing (code 32) on the way home. Again, no code after restart. Drove around with no codes till a couple weeks ago when I got a 32 again after about a 50 mile trip.

Since the car seems to run fine and only seems to throw a 32 on a long trip I'm not too concerned but the darn check engine light drives me crazy when it comes on. I've even taken to putting a piece of black tape over the check engine light.

Is this anything to be concerned about or is it probably just a piece of carbon getting stuck somewhere in the EGR and then clearing itself out?

Thanks for the help.

Its a finicky code, tough to track down sometimes. Its nothing you really need to worry about though, in terms of damage.

It can be the solenoid/switch, a clogged EGR pipe, or even a loss of vaccuum from not having the gas cap tightened sufficiently.

Pull the EGR and inspect it.. it's probably all carbond up. Could be causing it to stick shut or a blocked passage... to verify vaccum going to it.. just disconnect the hose to the diaphram and put a vacuum gauge where you can see it take it for a ride and monitor the gauge from time to time to verify that it is being applied under cruise conditions. i would probably do this first. if that is fine and you are seeing the correct amount of vacuum then I would pull the valve check the EGR for carbon build up.

Getting to the EGR absolutely stinks, it'll take you a few hours. And if there is any doubt about the EGR, I would change it because of the hours of labor it will take getting to and assembling everything. At least the first time, it will take a while. I can do it pretty quick, probably 15 minutes, which isn't a good thing because that means I've taken done it a few times! :L

Had much the same problem on my 85 with a manual transmission. The EGR valve has a temperature sensor on it, I don't know if the automatics have this sensor or not. When I was getting Code 32 during a long high speed run, it turned out that the wire was broken off at the sensor. When I took the sensor out, it basically fell apart. New sensor solved the problem. Hope this is of some help.

And by the way, the EGR valve is a pig to get at ......

On the '88 the sensor is on top of the rear of the passenger side of the engine. If you follow the pipe with the wrap on it - the switch on the top is the one that detects the flow of exhaust(heat). on mine the center pin had backed out.

Gotta love the info we get here!

Thanks for the information brookman. I checked the switch and it was backed out a little just like you said your was. Tigtened it up, cleared the codes and I'll see if that does the trick. May not be doing a long trip for a while since winter weather is settling in but I'll keep and eye on it.

Appreciate the information. This site sure is helpful.

My 88 still does the same thing yours does. I also just put a piece of tape over the SES light. I changed the egr solenoid switch, and the temp. switch. It didn't solve the problem though. The car runs great, it used to bug me quite a bit(the light). But now I just tune it out, and concentrate on enjoying my C4. One day I will change the egr.
