'89----Sorry for the pic but I just stuck the camera underneath and hoped for the best. This looks like an overflow tube, it's very soft plyable rubber, but it's connected to the 'starter motor'..!! Why would anti-freez be flowing out ot it?? I just had a brand new heater core put in last week. When I put the by-pass hose I had made up on, it doesn't leak there anymore. Any information would be greatly appreciated..!!!

How do I get this pic out of thumnail and larger so you can see it????

This appears to be a Chrysler product gear reduction starter. Don`t worry about the anti freeze, it`s probably some left over from the heater core replacement that dripped down on the engine. :upthumbs

Thanks for the reply Iron but wish that was the case. I start the engine and it pours out, hot......Iam constantly now having to put water back in the rad....will take it back to the place where the core was put in monday.....can't believe a bran new core is leaking....but.....when I put the by-pass hose on and it stops leaking, that proves the freez plugs are good, correct????......still like to know what that overflow tube is or whatever.....

All you have to do to see it larger is click on it and it will expand to full-size. ;)

I'm confused by this statement:
When I put the by-pass hose I had made up on, it doesn't leak there anymore.

What bypass are you referring to, the throttle body coolant bypass that people sometimes perform? There is no way that coolant will be coming from the starter; that just doesn't make any sense. I have no idea what the tube is though.

Ken,
Yes, I by pass the heater core totally with a u-shape hose that connects the inlet to the outlet. The leaking then stops.... ;shrug I'm confussed myself...never seeen a tube comming out of a starter motor...it's definetly factory made and put there for a reason but.....My only guess is a freez plug is leaking and water is going over or thru the bellhousing, into the gear housing of the starter motor and out that damn little tube.....hell i don't know..

Well that's a new one on me. Hang in there, someone will come along who knows what the tube is for. :CAC

starter

I just replaced the stater on my '95 Chevy G 20 conversion van. The new (and the old) had a short rubber tube coming from the bottom front of the starter. I assumed it was to get rid of any moisture buildup or water that might get in from driving in wet conditions.
Have never seen this on any other GM vehicles I've owned.
Also, both old and new starters do not look like the typical steel shelled GM starters I'm used to seeing but rather the slightly smaller high-torque starter.

Your not looking at the drain tube for the A/C are you?

It's in the general vicinity of the starter and I'll guess if the heater core leaks, the anti-freeze may come out of it!

Hey Bro

Luck is a gone delusion of the past now. While I was at Auto Air the guy's jack slipped off and went thru the floor board......the future looks bleak....

What?? How could he do such a thing? Was a child working there, who had no experience whatsoever with cars? I would be ****ed to say the least. :mad

You had better receive adequate compensation for the damages. Friggin' morons! :eyerole

Has anyone come up with an explanation for the tube that appears to be part and parcel of the starter motor? Inquiring minds want to know. :confused

The tube coming out of the starter motor is a drain tube for if you go through a puddle and water gets splashed up into the starter it won't let the starter motor to get filled up with water.

Make sense?

Mike.
