Hello all,
I'm writing with some questions to my 1970 corvette. The car has been in my family since 1970 but has sat under a cover for 25 years. My grandfather had the car and placed it in storage before he passed away. All the numbers match! I have found no info on a LS6 motor in a 1970 vette? I even have the window sticker that was on the car along with all original books. It even has the M-22 4 speed. Why is this motor not listed as an option on the vette in 1970? The chevelles had them. Could this be special ordered? The original window sticker is really faded so I can't make out the dealership it was purchased at.....if it still exists. Does anyone have any information on a 1970 LS6 powered vette. Please help!

Darren

Darren,
The LS6 did not come along for the Vette until '71. The '70 Vette only had the LS5. What are you baseing it being an LS6 on?

Tom,
Everything I've found on print say the same thing....LS5. The window sticker clearly states optional 454 LS6 package with a very high cost. There is also a sticker behind the master cylinder that gives information on car including engine 454/450 hp along with rmp setting at idle. I've started taking apart the motor and it's solid lifter...no hydralic. It even has the stickers on the air cleaner 454/450. The rpm gauge on the inside of the care has the red line set at 71 ls6 standard. I used to work at the Tonawanda engine plant outside of Buffalo, NY and have already placed calls to some contacts that are trying to track down the number of ls6 motors produced in 69 and 70. Not sure what good it will do. How else can i tell. Never seen an Ls6 motor and have no other way to find out. The owner of a local corvette shop told me that he has heard of ls6 motors making it into a couple of 70 vettes. Could this have been a special order from a dealership?
Darren

There were no LS6' s made in 70. 118 were made in 71. Are you sure it's not a 71. If you do have a 71 LS6 keep it as there in 100k range now if you can find one. I was looking for one awhile back until I found out the price, looks like I'll have to search for and LS5. It could be that there was a motor swap at one time, but you said it has been in the family for 25 years so probably not.
not sure how a 71 motor could make into a 70 car, the other way around maybe. could be a 71 and he was one of the first to buy in late 70..strange to say the least

If you can document it you will have the first one found. The LS6 option was intended to be available in the '70 but didn't make it into production on the Corvette til '71. And then with lower compression and 425hp. There were a bunch in the Chevelles though. I had a '70 SS 454/450 LS6 El Camino. The LS6 had pop up pistons, rectangular port heads, aluminum intake ect.

Can you scan the window sticker and post it here? I would like to see a photo of the emissions sticker with the idle rpm ect. on it too. Have you looked for the tank sticker yet?

I'm over across the bay. I'll come over with my digital camera and take all the pics you need! Let me know if I can help.

Tom,

Is this maybe something the NCRS might be able to shed some light on??

Guys,
thanks for all the help in trying to figure this mess out. I was speaking with my father and knows some of the history but was in Vietnam when my grandfather ordered the car. He claims there were never any modifications or engine swaps. From what he remembers is that the car was ordered by the owner of the dealership for himself but does not know much else. It still has original paint and 21k original miles. As for the tank sticker....years of sitting in a musty barn ate it. There is only a small corner that i ws able to find. I will post the window sticker and will also post all other info but my scanner is not the greatest so i'm not sure how it will turn out. I must admit this is the first vette i have ever owned and don't know a lot about them. I restored a 67 GTO and my family was going to just give the car away so I took it. The car is a 1970 unless DMV in NY made a mistake but the numbers all back it up as a 70. Even the rear end and M-22. I'm spending so much time trying to find out the history of the car to make sure I can say it is a 70 with an ls6 motor. Thanks
Darren

Do you have any date info

Bill of sale...pink..service records,etc

That MIGHT be the answer to the puzzle.. a very LATE 1970..... Like a December car.

GM had to start somewhere....

Very cool find!

Good Luck

I can't wait

Send some PIX!

Hurry... this might be one of THOSE cars.

Document everything......

Don't try to start it unless you are 100% sure it's good to go... You would hate to seize that engine....

Drain all fluids!
remove plugs.. spray oil down the plug holes.. let it sit... change oil & filter, remove distrib & get an oil pump priming tool ( drill motor powered ) run it until the oil pressure gauge comes up ( but it might be clogged so just run it the oil comes up to the lifters) turn the engine over by hand a few times... then try to start it... the fuel pump will probably be toast.

Oh I'm excited for you!

Darren, Saturday Nov. 16th Ferman Chev. in Brandon is having a 50th Corvette Birthday Bash. There will be 1 car for every year ('53-2003) on display, along with about 200 others. I'm sure you will find someone there who will have the answer. Come over and join us if you can. The event is from 10:00 - 5:00pm.
Oh yea...WELCOME TO Corvette Action Center. You'll find it a lot of fun.

Rick,
sounds great! I'll be there if I'm not out of town for work. Were you ever at Ronnie Setzers in Tampa awhile back? Your car looks pretty familiar.
Darren

Darren,

Do you know the name of the dealership that the car was ordered from? Can you post the VIN?

Yes, but I haven't been to one of his events in a long time. Again, if you want I'll bring my digital over and we'll get some pics.
Thanks,
Rick

No idea the name of the dealership. I worked at the Tanawanda plant where most of those motors came from and they have records but not sure what it will tell me. I'll post the VIN number but you have to give me some time since I'm at work still and not at home.

The 70-72 judging manual has no reference whatsoever to a 70 LS6 as I expected. The manual does list the ID numbers for verifying a 71 LS6 though and here's what I found. If any of these numbers match then the car either has a 71 LS6 motor or you have one heck of a rare car. One thing that always comes up with 70-72 cars is that a lot of changes would trickle in so you might see some 71 features on a late production 70 but this is more common with late 71s haing 72 dtuff like the yellow lenses or missing fiber-optics.

Here are the #s for 71 LS6:
Engine block broadcast code - CPW (w/ 4-spd)
Intake - (aluminum) 3963569

That should give you a start at documenting this bad boy. However, since these are 71 numbers they may mean absolutely nothing if this car was indeed built this way in 70. If they mathc then the engine is out of a 71 and there's no telling what came in this car.

Eric,
thanks for your reply. this should really help me out and i'm still trying to track down the dealership it was sold from. I can assure you that the dealership is not there any longer according to my father, but any info i can gather on this vette makes it well worth it. A good story to tell at cruise nights al least.
Thanks again,
Darren

Darren,
Can you post the numbers from the engine stamp pad? (on the block in front of the passanger side head, should be two sets of numbers stamped there.) With that we may be able to get somewhere.

tom...

Darren, Anything new you can add? I'm available this coming Friday if you want some pix taken. Don't forget, Saturday Nov. 16th is the 50th Corvette party at Ferman. If you email me, I'll send you my cell number.
