I will be watching this thread closely as I am thinking about doing the same thing. The Bose system on my '89 seems like a lot of hype and marketing...or it's just 20 years old. :D

I just did this a few weeks ago.

I was able to use the Bose enclosures, front and back. Rewire the speakers, buy the bypass wiring harness for the control box,and follow the directions for the resisters to keep the Sys light from coming on.it only took a few hours to complete.

Being an '85, I don't know if mine has a Sys light. Or maybe I've just never seen it.

Speakers: 84-89, 6.5 round fit the door, use a "notch" filter set at 160 Hz. 6.5 round will work in the rear enclosure.Metra makes a nice install kit. I think the antenna is in the head unit on your year, so you souldn't need an extention. its different that my 90.

So did any of you guys who got rid of the Bose put in a modern non-Bose system in a six speaker configuration (2 rear, 2 door, 2 dash)?

Any links to the Metra Kit? What is the notch filter for?

its a frequency filter, apparently the speaker in the door effects the frequency response. This helps reduce the frequency at 160 so your speakers don't sound like they are in a chamber.

On the 89 and before, do you need to unplug the Bose relay when you go to an aftermarket HU and speakers? I just want to make sure non of the bose stuff has power.

The PO put in a double deck Alpine HU in my 89 and put in 4" Memphis speakers in the doors and rear. He hacked into the bose wiring and used that.

I ran new speaker wire 16 gauge, and was planning on reusing the door bose pods. But was looking at putting 6x9" in the rear. I know there is a cut out for 6x9", but the mounting holes don't line up. How did you guys mount your rear 6x9" speakers?

On My 90 once I used the bypass harness and new speaker wires the Radio rec was out of the loop which should have made the relay inoperative.

I think I used 6.5 coax in the rear and the screws lined up

The guys as Sound Repair can fix the Bose and upgrade some of its components and if that is what you want, They my be interested in buying your old Bose system. they fixed mine and it works great.

I believe you are right about the wires.

It's different alright. are both of those for the rear? the one on the right looks like my front one.

I got the speaker info from a web site and that is what speakers they said to use. I will look later at the rear speakers from that site and see if they are different.
