since i am still in school what would be the best way to gain horsepower for the money spent other than a k&n,but only spending about 500 to 1 thousand

thanx

Chip and exhaust will make it sound better and have a little more kick.

A rear gear swap will make that LT1 go crazy especially in conjunciton with better exhaust and chip.

The LT1 intake and heads are already pretty well designed and have the potential of making much more hsp with a good cam, intake, and exaust.

What do you want out of the car? Faster 0-60, or top end?

All of this will depend on what you need to mod.

Shop around and get a good deal on some 3.73 or 4.11 rear gears. That will make that car scream up to 60. You will see faster acceleration from doing that than installing a supercharger on a stock rear gear.

how about up to 500 what could i get to make my 0-60 quicker

Nothing like a little laughing gas for the engine!!!!!!!!!

Excellent idea! I have installed NOS systems before and have continued to be impressed by the punch it gives.

Searching for torque

I too am looking for faster 0-60; I'd like more torque. My '96 LT1 has plenty of Hp and top speed. I am adding K&N filter and cover and in the future would like to add full Borla exhaust.

If I am following correctly, the lower rear end gearing would yield the desired effect best?

Also, do I have this right; throttle body would do more at high flow times and affect high RPM performance, not low end torque?

What is up with the reprogramers anyway; do the aftermarket engineers design a better program than GM or does it just spray more fuel, are there multiple programs available, where is the stock program saved, if they are reusable can I find a buddy and borrow theirs, does it use ODD II port...?

Any advise Ken, Chris, C4 specialist, anyone...
Thanks a bunch, Chris N :D

Faster 0-60 is useless, since you can't really time your car for that test (Gtechs are junk)......1/4 mile time works the best, once you get your talent down and turn consistent times, low or not. Who races to 60mph anyway?

more info

I drive my vette in the mountains where I live, along short stretches of 55mph, and in the SF Bay area. 0 to 60 is where I drive and I'd like the torque for hole shot off the line type acceleration. There is no where around me where I can go 100.

It is hard to keep in the best part of the power band, 3500-6000, and not speed off the road and into a tree. Need more poop around 2000-4000. I never use OD and often drive in 2nd.

The LT1/4 engine loves more RPM, thus a better gear to get it to spin up faster and net quicker 0-60 times. A larger throttle body wont hurt after the gear has been swapped to get more air flow to allow the engine to really breathe in deep. Too large of a Throttle body (1,000 cfm) on an otherwise stock engine will kill your torque.

Reprogramming the computer gives you different fuel/spark characteristics. They can force the computer to hold the injector pulse open longer thus giving you more fuel for a given RPM and load factor.

In all, an engine is nothing but an air pump. The more air you can pump in and back out efficiently, the more power it will make under a given RPM band.

You could do gears, headers, 52mm throttle body, and computer reprogram for under $3,000 and make a significant impact on the 0-60 and or 1/4 mile performance of that car. There is no reason a LT1/4 could not dip into the low 12's providing you could get traction, and or 0=60 in four seconds or less (with traction).

On an automatic car you would have to look into a higher RPM stall converter right away, or all this would not amount to much. On a six speed, the performance difference would be breathtaking.
