I knew going into the project from talking to others that it would be there a long time so it wasn't really too much of a surprise. He and I discussed trying to have the car ready in March but because of what I already knew I was HOPING it would be done by than but I wasn't too surprised that it wasn't. Actually, with the car almost done now at 10 months most everyone that I talk to that knows him says this has to be one of his speedier jobs! Pretty much anything less than one year is fast for him and considering the extent of the bodywork that was required (and unexpected) the time frame isn't surprising at all. remember, he is all alone - no helpers or anything. He has to do every single thing on every car in the shop himself unlike a regular collision/insurance shop with a lot of employees and their main goal is to get the cars in and out fast for volume turnover. There are one or two other Corvette specialty shops around that I could have used instead that I'm sure would have been faster but I doubt they would have given the car as much attention to detail as my guy has done and I know that their price would have been SIGNIFICANTLY more since I went to other shops when I was hunting around for where to get the work done. One shop that I won't name quoted me $20,000 just for a paint job without bodywork except basic prep work for paint! All the bodywork my guy did would probably have almost doubled that price at that other shop.
So, really the time the car has been there is really not unexpected, I was really just hoping it would have been done sooner so I could have enjoyed more of our limited driving season here up North. In the long run though it is worth the wait. A few weeks or months now means nothing for the bodywork and paint to be right for the next 15-20 years.

The ironic part is that by nature I'm VERY impatient! Probably the most impatient person you will ever meet. This project is testing me severly but mainly because of my own nature rather than the time frame which I had already expected.

A friend of ours owns a Volkwagen & Porche shop and he does repairs and a lot of custom cars and show cars. Mainly only volkswagen now because he says the Porche customers are a real PIA. Besides the mechanical work and custom fabrication he also does all his own bodywork and painting. He has seen every picture I've taken since day one on my project and he said considering the amount of bodywork required that the time frame we are in is not unreasonable at all and it's what he would have expected to see. And looking back, a number of months were used up with the car sitting around not being worked on. First, my guy let the car sit for almost a month after stripping to let any residue stripper vent out of the fiberglass which is good and greatly reduces the risk of solvent popping when we are all done, and than we had the whole fiasco of almost two months waiting for PPG to get my Milano Maroon color mixed properly with the BC/CC paint. If we had gone with lacquer again the paint would have taken about one day to order and recieve instead of 7 weeks.

so, the time frame is what it is but we are almost done. If it's done this Friday than GREAT, if not, it will be done next week. Looks like Baby's return home is sometime between the 15th thru the 22nd

Barry,
With respect, time to kick ass. That fellow is jerking you around. Sorry to be so blunt but nice guys like you do finish last at times. I feel so badly for you when I post pics of my car events. Believe me, 90% looks great, 100% can make you miserable. A year to paint a car is just nonsense. Perfection is what? A year lost? Hope to see you on the road soon! The summer is flying by.

All the Best,

Paul

Thanks Barry,
I was a little brutal on my last post. But I have a good Canadian beer ready for a hoist on your outing. I'm ready. Make it happen!

Paul
don't worry about it. no problem.

thanks for the kind offer but i don't drink (maybe it's time for me to start! ;LOL)

just stop by and see Baby while you are there. She wants to meet everyone by now. I tell her all the news from the forum when i'm visiting her. :D

VNV,
I just drop my Tilley hat on top of the air cleaner lid. I still have hair so do not need it for that purpose for my head.

You know we're only having some fun with you don't you Barry!;) We hope the odd laugh and smile will help you get through this waiting period. For those of us who haven't met you yet we look forward to meeting you and Linda and seeing BABY after BABY's "Makeover" is done. It's great you take it in stride with your good nature and we all get a laugh together and it will be easy to pic out the CAC crowd at Carlisle...it's the good looking group that's laughing, having a great time together and the ones with the biggest smiles:D . And of course don't forget with those awesome vettes too! We'll all see you soon Barry. Hang in there, you are only days away now and the garage will be full again!:upthumbs

thanks doug
one of the things I'm looking forward to the most at Carlisle is meeting people from here.
Of course, Baby may decide to drip oil on the toes of those who said bad things while she was away............. but she will only be kidding around too! ;LOL

Drip oil? I have a couple of rear main seals in the basement. I see another project coming on.

LOL Paul
Baby doesn't normally drip oil at all.......... only when she doesn't like something or someone..............
I think she has her own personality, like Herbie.
;LOL

actually, it was nice to see that even after 10 months of sitting in the paint shop - not one drop of oil under her at all no matter where she was in the shop. I guess my main seals are doing fine.

:ugh :ugh :ugh [note to self, wear my oil stained work boots when I meet Barry and his car!]

only way to get through patience-testing situations is to maintain your sense of humor, and you're holding up well Barry! I guess I agree with where your head is at now - the time to have gone ballistic on the paint guy was 4 months into the job with no progress. Now, a few days away (although a completely unpainted hood seems like it could fould that up) it would likely be a waste of your breath and blood pressure.

Here's to a July homecoming for your car!

Jack
yes, the first few months were very slow progress but that was more my own fault than his if I want to be completely honest about it. He and I still laugh about that. I left him the car for about 2 days originally to look at for an estimate and quote on the job. After I went back and he told me the price I said fine, do the job. He said he was too busy right than to get on my car and to take it back home and he would call me once one or two of the other cars in the shop were done and gone than he would get my car in. Knowing if I took the car out of his shop it would be at least 6 months before I'd be able to get it back in there I refused to take it home. I just left it figuring if it was in his way he would eventually get to it so that's what happened. He still had the other cars to finish up on but he did start on my car albeit slowly. He tells other customers my car is the one he had no choice but to work on because I wouldn't take it away and so he had to work on it just to eventually get it out of there. ;LOL
Really, if I had taken it back home that day back in Sept. I'd be lucky if she would have been back at all yet considering how many cars he has to work on. :D

Andy

today's update........ I just got back from the shop.

The paint booth has been tied up as they were repainting it and changing out all the filters in it but it should be up and running tomorrow again so the hood getting painted tomorrow.
The buffing is pretty much all done except for a couple areas he still wants to go back and go over again one more time.
he has started reassembly!! YEAH!
When I showed up today he already had the front bumpers and grill on plus the front parking lights/turn signal lights. Also the door locks and door handles and he was working on putting in the new windshield clips and test fitting the new windshield trim molding (he's NOT having a fun time test fitting the molding! I know Bob understands this from his fight on the same thing with 67Heaven). The new windshield gasket is also on the windshield so that's almost ready to drop in.

I couldn't stay long today but I told him I would show up first thing tomorrow morning and give him a hand cleaning a lot of the parts that need to be reinstalled and clean the whole interior so we can get the interior all put back together.

So, the car won't be done tomorrow for this weekend but it looks like sometime next week is a sure definate! :) That light at the far end of the tunnel is really starting to come into view now finally (just hope it's not an oncoming train).

All of us that know you , and some who know u from CAC will CROSS our fingers and toes that this is definately the "END"..We want videos of Baby leaving the shop, arriving home with a HUGE WELCOME HOME BABY banner...hell, lets have a "WELCOME HOME BABY party!! Are u thinking of that yet!!!!

yes i am thinking of that Andy. just going to wait until i KNOW she is home first THAN i'll plan a party.
Besides, don't want anyone to see her until i get her all fully cleaned and detailed again. The engine compartment, underside, interior, etc all need a gdod detailing from the sanding dust all over her

Andy

working tomorrow morning or are you free? want to help clean parts and interior stuff? :D
