I'm still wondering why anyone would pay for Onstar? I personally do not find that it is a value added option.

Not only where you are but also the speed at which you are traveling. Since OnStar (VCIM) is on the internal network it can obtain lots of information and control many things. That is how they are able to reduce engine speed and stop the vehicle in case of theft.
