I'm at a loss on this one.
The one area I am familiar with that has been identified for leaving a mark or grease track is the center of the back. The marks usually happen when the whole top is lowered or raised as one piece. The rear of the top needs to be lowered first then the rest of the top pressed down into the storage area. When raising, pull the leading edge of the top up first and let the rear of the top follow it out. If the top catches on the bottom of the trunk lid there are things under there that can leave marks and grease streaks.

I hope this helps.

Mine also has marks on the side after I have it down for any period of time. The only thing that seems to make it go away is washing it. So I wonder if it just isn't the knap of the material?

You may be right. I notice the same marks on the sides of the roof after it is down for a while. They seem to go away with a rinse and dry.
