Hello Gang,
I'm having a problem with a bouncing fuel gauge on my '79. When the car is sitting still at idle, the fuel gauge reads like it should. When the car starts moving, the gauge will start bouncing like there is a short. Right now I have 3/4 tank of gas at stand still. When I start moving, it will bounce down as far as half tank. The bounce isn't consistant.
So far, I've cleaned both posts on the sending unit, checked the ground where the black wire on the sending unit grounds to the frame, and I've replaced the negative cable and cleaned the area the negative cable bolts to on the frame. I haven't checked the gauge itself yet because I don't believe the problem is there.
One more bit of info, when the tank is full, the gauge doesn't bounce. As it empties, the needle will start to bounce. The lower the tank gets, the more needle bounce I get. This isn't a needle movement that occurs by fuel sloshing in the tank. This is making me lean toward a shorting sending unit. I'm asking for some opinions from you guys to see if you might think it's the sending unit also. Thanks for reading the post.
