brake booster

My brakes are bad...BAD...and i think its the booster...
when you press all the way on your breaks does it hiss?
also the first time i break my parking brake light comes on then the service abs and asr come on and stay on...
i think that its my booster thats causing the problem so is it hard to replace?
and if i buy one at auto zone or checker will that be fine? and how much am i looking at spending?

The brake pedal will feel very hard and you will hear hissing when the booster has gone. The booster isn't difficult to change, it's just a difficult spot to get to. There are only two bolts holding that brake booster on.

You'll have to take the bolts off the master cylinder from the booster, some disconnect the brake lines while others do not. IMO, I would disconnect the brake lines so they won't break and it will give you an excuse to flush out the brake fluid.

Then disconnect the air line into the booster.

You would then take off the panel right above the drivers feet. You will then see how the booster is connected from the inside. It's not hard to do but if you keep the drivers seat in, you will be upside down trying to get to those two bolts.

In all, took me about 2.5 hours to do because you can only work for so long when the blood is rushing to your head. :L

Some of the units from Auto Zone or any of the other large retailers are possible rebuilds using a metallic case instead of the plastic OEM case. IMO, I think they work just as well. My rebuilt unit I got from Murray's has worked well for the past 3 years.

Brake Booster.

The booster in my '84 went bad, so I got a rebuilt booster from AutoZone. It was bad, right out of the box! I called a couple of rebuilders, and they told me that parts aren't available to rebuild these units, so they suspect I got junk yard parts in my "rebuilt" booster.

I found a new custom made Dual Diaphragm booster at SAC Hot Rod Products in Orange CA (714-997-3433). This Dual Diaphragm booster is a huge improvement over my original booster. Brake are much, much better than ever! The ZR-1 also uses a Dual Diaphragm booster, but the ZR-1 booster won't fit the standard C-4 'vette. This booster cost me $435, and it is definitely worth the money! It fit right in . . . and I didn't even need to disconnect the hydraulic brake lines from the master cylinder.
