I built a '61 Corvette model for my dad for Christmas to look like his real car. The model is actually a resin body and interior that matches up to the '62 chassis that's out now. I had to convert the intake from a fuel injection to the 4-bbl version like dad's. The orange thing in the seat is the pillow that's always in the car. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I also made mini versions of the brochures and books that he carries in the trunk. Finally, I made a "box" to go with it. I used real pictures of his car and just covered the model box so it looked like it was really of his car, then I had it shrinkwrapped. Not great pictures, as usual, but I thought the model turned out pretty nice.

That's going to blow his mind! Shrink-wrapped, no less. What a neat present! Hard to imagine a more thoughtful gift.

That blows my mind, I can't imagine what your dad will think!!!! Obviously you put alot of time in on this one, it's simply amazing!

Wow! How much time did you have to put into that?

What a cool gift!

Very creative and unique. I'm sure your dad will love it.
When you say you built it, did you actually cast the body or is it available commercially? I take it from your post that there is also a frame available. Where could I purchase these items? What did you use for the "chrome" paint?

Thanks, guys! I like to buld them, so it isn't as selfless as you might think. :)

The body and interior is a Shawn Carpenter hand-cast resin. I bought it at a toy and model show a few years ago, just finally got around to building it. I don't know much else about it. Maybe there's more info on the Web, but I've never really checked.

The chassis and engine and stuff is just standard issue AMT '62 kit. They're usually around at the hobby store or on eBay. It isn't a particularly old kit.

I generally paint with auto touch-up paint from the parts store with a white primer base, i.e., Duplicolor. The chrome trim is made with a product called Bare Metal Foil. It somes in sheets you buy at the hobby store. It looks like aluminum foil with a mild sticky back. You just cut it out, stick it on, and trim it with a razor blade or hobby knife.

Hope this helps!

Very nice effort and the model turned out great! I'm sure your dad will be proud. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Ever considered doing a '98 Carmine Red? ;)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Unbelieveable job! Very thoughtful and extremely detailed. What a great gift!

Christmas is past, I'm curious to know your dad's reaction!! Had to be at least as impressed as I was when I saw your efforts. Let us know what his impressions were!!!
