1992 vette, automated
Car stay in first gear until the
RPM reach 4000 rpm then it shifts to next gear. The transmission fluid smells burnt. It's no longer red, it's blacken.
How bad is it? Am I Hosed?
What is the expected cost to fix this problem?

Is it still shifting hard? If it shifts through all of the gears I would pull the pan, dump the fluid, reinstall the pan add fluid, drive it a couple of miles and repeat the process one more time and then on the third time dropping the pan I would change the filter. But I am anal about my tranny fluid.

Or you can do the old tranny fluid flush.

The transmission is toast... as to cost, a lot of money to be sure (well over $1000, closer to 2K with labor), and be sure to have the lines and cooler flushed when you have it reconned or replaced. You're going to have to replace the torque converter, so you might look into a high-perf unit while it's all apart.

The most likely cause of why it failed from your description points to the TV cable being out of adjustment. As to whom to take it to? Let me just say I distrust 95% of transmission shops, so I can't give you any idea who to take it to.

I believe the clutches are burnt in your tranny. Yes, autos have clutches. The fluid usually burns from too much clutch slippage and then the burnt fluid starts to let other components fry. It's time for a rebuild or replacement. I'm not sure which year Chevy went to the electronic 700R4(4L60E?), but that will be more $$ than a regular 700R4. I would call or visit a local Chevy dealership and ask to talk to the 'Corvette Mechanic' and ask him who he would let work on your tranny.

Good luck,

offtopic,

I had my tranny rebuild last spring, The fluid was not burnt at all but same problem with shifting.
and when the car was sitting in the garage for longer than 24 hours it started leaking too.

my mechanic tought it was something like the torque converter ???

anyhow the tranny company opened it up and they found it had to be rebuild.

ontopic

does your tranny leak too ?
rebuild in Europe is also in 2K price range.
(including removal, transport to tranny company and mounting back on to the car)

good luck

Hi there,
There is also the option of the GM SRTA transmission assembly.
They come with a 3 year, 100000 mile warranty from GM that is good coast to coast.

We put a GM replacement trany in the Suburban (265,000miles on the old one) a few years ago. It was 2400€ exchange in Germany which is a great deal in Euro-land. Unless you are going to have a hi-pro transmission built the unit that C4C5 recommends is quick, painless and guaranteed to work.

The S-Klass ate its transmission last week, 3 years old -111K miles. The MB estimate is over $20,000. Tell me more about that great European Quality. (It was in the shop 3 times for tranny noise before the failure.)

Sell or Fix is on my mind

Right now I am on the fence.
I have put a lot of money into this car.
Purchase car 3 years ago
Spent
$1k tires
$1k All new front-end parts
$3K Optispark, radiater, balancer, water-pump, emission stuff. alternator. ( All the Good stuff...cut no corners )
Now A TRANSMISSION
I got the money to fix it but maybe its time to sell, take the lost. :bs

Right now I am on the fence, will make a decision this weekend

I had my 700r4 in my 88 rebuilt in Dec. of 03......total cost was only 750.00 and that was including tax , labor....that was here in Tennessee......its been working fine......

difficult decission,

I bought my car 6 years ago and had practically no costs during the first 3 years.

saved a lot of money to buy me another, then the suffer began,
first head gaskets then engine broke down, and the tranny

head gaskets 1k
new engine, 3k
new tranny 2k

then I decided to buy me a complete interior set + weatherstrips and decided to keep it,

what's new and under warranty cannot create new costs so I will enjoy the car for a few more year and save me some money to buy me a new car in a few year.

thats my story.

4L60E

I to do not know for sure when GM went to the 4L60E but I do know that my 93 that was built in the 34th week of production still had the 4L60. For those who are curious about the difference between the4L60 and The 4L60E. The 4L60 shift was controlled by cable from the asr unit. On the 4L60E the shift points were controlled by the computer. The E designates elctronic shift.

'92 is the 700R4
