Can someone tell me how the upper inner shaft is attached in the crossmember on my 61'? I didn't want to ruin anything by beating on it, but I do want to remove them before painting the crossmember. I will be rebuilding the front suspension. I have the body on a dolly and the frame is cleaned & painted. Now ready to start re-assembly.

Larry,

DO NOT remove the upper/inner shafts unless they are worn out! Mask them off and blast or paint the crossmember with them in place. They are threaded in place, but you risk loosening the welded in bushings that they are threaded into by removing them. Then there is the issue with new ones being too big and being a real ***** to install. They install with a slightly tapered thread, and are real tough to install. These shafts wear forever if kept lubricated.
