C2 Instrument Cluster-yikes!

It's all ready to go back together now - most items are new.

Question concerning the piece of tape (shown in the left large opening here). What purpose does it serve? It covers the gap in the area between the ignition switch and the small gauges.

Did the cut-out (covered by the tape) exist in 1963? Was the ignition switch design changed sometime between '63 and '67 necessitating the cut-out?

Well I guess I found a new poject to do next winter.I just went out to the garage and climbed up onto the lift to see mine.I had always thought it look great (but it looks like a 30 + year old cluster) did you document your source on on your web page? I should start collecting my needed parts now.

I just got done fully tearing apart and restoring mine as well and it makes a huge impact on the look of the interior. (Guess because it is the single prominent feature you see when in the drivers seat).

I highly recommend this project if you haven't done it already, and are comfortable with this level of work.

No left over parts, what did you do with the tape Great job it looks great, I guess you didn't watch the doubleheader on CBC last night or you would have been up till 3 like me and not got anything done.

I returned it to its rightful position. Since the stickiness was long gone, I used a Loctite product (like Krazy Glue) to set it in place.

By the way, on re-examining it, I realized that it is probably canvas, not tape.

C'mon JohnZ. What's the story behind this stuff?

I got the parts from ZIP, but back-orders drove me crazy. Also, I am returning the wiper knob as the design does not allow it to sit as far onto the shaft as the original....in other words, it sits too far away from the dash. It also was of pretty poor finish around the circumference of the black center portion.

The rest of the knobs were fine.

You can see individual photos of the parts in Chapter 23.

There was apparently a slide in the die-cast mold at that location to create the "window" there in the wall of the housing, and the fabric tape was glued over the "window" to kill a "light leak" under the dash from the small-gauge group on that side; mine has it too.
