I own a 2000 C5 with 40,000 miles. The dealer is telling me it's time to change the fuel filter and transmission fluid, for $425. The owners manual says 100,000 miles for the transmission fluid, but does not indicate an interval for gas filter service. Is the dealer trying to hose me?

HI there,
This really depends.
I always suggest fuel filter every 15k, simply for the moisture that is absorbed by this filter.
As for the transmission, I suggest every 2 year or 24k, due to the fact that some transmissions are driven harder than others.
Cheap insurance for bigger problems down the line.

Doesn't $425 seem like an awful lot for this service? I had an automatic transmission service done, and it was not nearly that much.

Yes. Too much. They love to rip 'Vette owners. Try another shop.

Dick Guldstrand told me to never exceed 15,000 miles on a C5 fuel filter. I would not exceed 50K miles on the transmission fluid. I agree with the prior posts that over $400 sounds excessive. Shop around.
Good luck, Paul

My question is, how difficult is it to change the fuel filter. What is the procedure to change it. Does it require special tools or training. Finally, what is the proper fuel filter to put on a y2k vette (I've got 32k on mine and probably should change it before I put mine to bed)..

It's not too bad. The FF is right above the left rear tire (Edit: actually between the wheel well and the drive train. Once you are up under there it's not hard to spot), mounted with a couple of screws. It takes a little mechanical skill, but it's really not too tough. Just remember when you take the line coming from the gas tank off it is going to loose a little fuel. Have a catch can and a few towels handy to catch it. It is just the fuel in the line and will stop after 1/2 cup or so.
I went to the local car parts and asked for the fram equivalent filter. It was $15 - $17 dollars or so. GM wanted $65 or $70.

Since I put mine up on jack stands to change the oil I replace the filter every other oil change. This crap they sell for gas in CA really sucks, and every performance tuner I have talked to about it suggests it. Often
