C5 Transmission/differential remove

I have a transmission leak (red fluid) from the joint between the trans to diff. Can I remove the differential from the car ad re seal the output of the transmission without removing the transmission and tourq tube.I now how to drop sub frame axels etc was wondering if I have to remove TT

Hi there,

Yes, you can remove the differential and service the output shaft seal from the transmission.

However, a few points for you.

#1, there was a seal revision because some of the older ones would take a set when the vehicle sat for an extended period of time. But once the vehicle was driven, it would reseal and not leak further until stored again.

#2, if you do not install the seal exactly straight, IT WILL LEAK AGAIN.

#3, the seal must be FLUSH with the rear casting.

The key with removing the differential is that you do NOT lower the driveline any more than is necessary. If you do lower the driveline too much, you will break parts on the rear of the engine or crack the firewall. Reference the diagram on the torque tube for correct lowering instructions.

Do you have to split 6 speed trans to replace output seal?

Thanks C4C5 for the advice on differential removal without removing 6 speed trans on my 2004 c5. I was thinking must I split the case on the trans to replace the 2 output seals or can they be removed and replaced with the shaft in place. I have the manual and the trans supplement and its a grey area to me. I am afraid when I split the case parts are going to fly out on the floor.:confused

HI there,

If you follow the directions in the service manual for removal of the differential carrier assembly, you should NOT have any problems at all.

Thanks C4C5 reseale 6 speed trans output seals inner and outer

The inner and outer seals on the 6 speed trans were changed it took about 8 -10 hours and I have a lift. Drove the car about 350 miles and it is dry no more leaks. My 2004 is like new now it was a garage queen with only 8500 miles that was the problem . I took about 50 pictures but did not need them its not really a bad job.
