Hib did it againn! Super in-depth analysis/critique that only he can do.
I had the opportunity a few days ago (at the NCRS National Convention in Windsor, Ontario...under the eyes of the GM Tower across the Detroit River) to drive around (a bit) the silver/black/black C6 vert that has a very early "EX" VIN (xxxx697, I think)....it's the one that was shipped to Europe for the convertible launch. Dave Hill (Wed nite 7-28) told us that it had a little "hand-done" stuff due to deadlines, and was not absolutely as saleable ones to come. It was a Z51 with the Nav, six-speed.
It DID sound pretty good to my old ears when I was able to tromp it in while in neutral. Maybe not as raspy as my Z06, but pretty nice. The six-speed was as smooth and easy as butter (again, an EX).
They also had a yellow targa that was owned by a GM HO guy, around VIN xxx119, and is for real. Beautiful lines and sculpturing on the much-bigger smoked targa top. Dave Hill showed us how quick and easy it is to remove and store the targa top....he did it himself twice in rapid order.
I'm glad now I ordered the coupe....it drew a lot of raves among our hundreds of NCRS types listening to Hill.
Dave Hill gave our NCRS group a 2-hour "walkaround" of two C6s (silver/black/black vert and yellow/black targa).
The pregnant topic of the front license bracket was brought-up by Dave himself, he beat the audience to it....he stated that Chevy had listened carefully to the widespread dissatisfaction ("mainly online forums chatter and the like") with the original bracket's "design"....and that Corvette designers have endeavored hard to provide a new configuration....it now stands as an attachment to the fascia by double-sticky adhesive (like the body side mouldings on the C5). Thus, there are NO holes to drill, and the bracket can be "easily" removed to serve that need, with no marring. Sounds OK to me....we need two plates.
