If you live in California, or any other state requiring smog certification, please note not all CAI applications are C.A.R.B. approved. If your CAI unit did not come with a C.A.R.B. sticker you will have to re-install your OEM air filter in order to certify your smog.

FYI....Vortex Rammer Air induction is not C.A.R.B. approved. :duh

The "any other state" part does not apply - C.A.R.B. stands for California Air Resources Board.

Gotta research the emissions laws very carefully. Some states have adopted California's emissions standards. In Texas, the standards vary depending on whether or not you are in one of the more heavily populated counties or not. That said, I don't think a CAI would be a no no in most states outside of California:beer

It's actually the same here - not all counties require smog checks. Unfortunately, I don't live in one of those counties. :W

The smog check is required everywhere in California.

What is different by county is when the test is performed and how comprehensive it is.

The "Enhanced" smog check is required in virtually all large urban areas, ie: greater San Francisco, greater Los Angeles and greater San Diego. This is the test that requires running the car on the dyno. It is required once every two years and upon transfer of title.

The "regular" smog check is reqired everywhere else except rural counties. It's just the old tailpipe at idle test. It is required every two years and upon transfer of title.

In rural areas, the regular smog check is required only at tranfer of title.

If you live in the O.C., you'll need to get a smog check starting in 2009 or 2010. This is because the first five years after a new car is purchased, the smog check is not required.

I was referring to the counties that only require smog inspection upon transfer of title. A smog check that doesn't apply to the current owner is the same as no smog check.

As long as we are splitting hairs, smog exemption applies for the first six years (not five) after a new car is purchased.
Ref. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2535:
"Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification."
