John.....Walt Knoch suggested you may have some knowledge for this issue. Here is my post below on CAC and CF. Can u help? walt's going to check with Al on this one as well. Appreciate any help.

Inner Door Seal..HELP!!!
I am looking for an inner door seal for a 1979. This is a piece about 24" long about the thickness of a pen, that is positioned along the vertical axis on the lip of the inner door panel.which holds the carpeting intack. My carpet job is at a standstill until i can locate a piece for each door. this piece does NOT go on the door itself.
I went to my local Chevy dealer this AM, and he told me the name of the piece , "inner door seal"..I've checked the vendors that I am aware of and NOTHING....any help would be appreciated.
Thanks..

Hi! Andy

I wold give:
http://www.corvette-rubber.com/

I have purchased most of my weather stripping and other rubber items from them and have been very happy with their products.

Andy has his car in my garage and I'm helping him with his carpet replacement.
this is the piece on both sides we are looking for and can not find it in any of the many catalogs we have and the local Chevy dealer knew of the piece and is the one calling it an Inner Door Seal but said they had no part number on it to order it.

Here are pics of the piece if anyone can help us find a supplier for it.

Thanks!

the piece goes on the lip in the area circled in red

Ray, thanks for the suggestion but I went to their site and it looks like they only have the actual weatherstripping pieces but not this inner door seal piece we need

dr rebuild ??????

hard to say but it looks like that has screw or rivit attachments along the length of it. Also, the description says it helps protect inner door hardware which makes me believe it's a piece that goes on the door itself maybe along the window edge if the door?
IT doesn't seem to be correct.

Andy is trying another Chevy dealer tomorrow that was helpful to me on a part for my '65 earlier this week and if they can't help and we can't find a source for this part elsewhere, there is a Corvette only salvage yard in Bristol, Pa about an hour or so away that we go going to take a drive to and see if we can find one off one of the wrecked cars they have.

I don't see a seal there in any of my references - was it added as part of the swing-up door conversion?

John
From what I can tell that was not part of the door conversion but looks to be stock. I don't believe the door conversion on his car required any type of modification to that area of the body, only in the front where the door normally hinges.
Besides this piece actually covering the fiberglass lip that is shown in my first picture, it also retains the leading edge of the carpet. We had to remove this piece on both sides to remove the carpet and on the new replacement carpet there is a section of material that is thin and wraps around this lip than this "molding piece or inner seal" is installed over the lip and carpet material holding that section of the carpet in place.

He did contact Wally Knoch whom he purchase dthe carpet from and Wally doesn't know about these pieces. He is suppose to check with Al Knoch and get back to Andy but I'm assuming if Al Knoch had these items than most if not all of the other carpet vendors would have them also. We went thru catalogs from a dozen or so vendors and no one seems to have this piece listed.
:confused

Hello all..I appreciate everyones help so far....Looks like that a trip to contemporary coervette might be in order. They have about 450 vettes in their "graveyward" and it is only an hour from us.....If you find anything, please let me know. How frustrating is this..1/2 the carpet job is on hold for this one little piece...almost as bad as the .42 cent allen wrench i needed to buy to remove a small screw for my door panle..MAN!!

Barry..I'll be in tocuh...BTW, i left the dreaded inner door seal over your house today (sigh).

Andy

OK, is this piece you're looking for actually on the body of the car, not the door? From what your first picture looks like, my '81 is just fiberglass, no nothing of anything else there. The piece in your hands in the last picture looks like the bond on the edge of the carpet, could it be that?

Craig
yes, it goes on the body, not the door. It fits on where the lip on the body is circled in red in the first picture.

As we recall when we removed the old carpet the carpet went over the lip that is circled than this piece fit over the lip "clamping" the carpet down to the lip and holding the carpet in place in that area.
The new carpet in that area has attached to it a thin fabric that extends past the carpet edge that looks to do the same thing........ wrap over that lip and than have this molding or seal piece fit over the lip to hold it in place. Besides holding the carpet in place there it also seems to act as a bit of a decrotive molding to dress up that lip to make it look better.

I'm assuming this area is identicle between Andy's '79 and your '81. Would it be possible to get a picture or two of your car (either drivers or passenger side so we can see how your door area looks and if you don't have this pice on your car how the carpet meets up to that lip area and is attached?

Andy,

The part you are looking for is called the door belt edge. This was only used on 1978 and 1979 cars. On 1980 – 1982 cars the rear quarter trim carpet part tucked under the rear door lock pillar and did not use this part. On your car, the rear quarter trim carpet set snapped to the rear lock pillar with the part you are looking for.

The part you need is actually the same as the wind lace used on earlier cars. On the 1978 – 1979 cars, this wind lace was covered with a Velour material that matched the interior carpet color of the car. It snapped on to the rear door lock pillar and held the carpet in place.

It was made to the carpet set and is not available separate. The only place that might have this part would be Auto Custom Carpets in Anniston Alabama.

WILLCOX INC.
