what would cause my car to bog at wide open?? rochester carburater, could my timing be off? or should I try to adjust carb?

IF the carb is stock and NOT modified it sounds as if the accelator pump is going bad.

I would adjust the secondary air valve first; it's a good place to start.

If it were the accelerator pump you should get an off idle stumble or bog also. I agree that the secondary air valve is probobly too loose. I have to keep mine fairly tight to keep it from bogging when going to WOT.

how do I adjust this secondary air valve? is there somewhere I could view what this part looks like?

i'd like to add, this forum has always given me some fast responses. whenever I read a thread, I always try to give help in anyway I can.. you got to wonder if your thread was read and someone thought, yea I know the problem, but someone else will help in out with his dilema..

Hi :)
I would sugguest cleaning the carberator and linkages first,"gumout" before trying any adjustments/check or change the fuel filter"in line" and also spray some eythyr in it "while running" and see if it Idles ok afterwards, next I would look VERY closely at the butterfly and see if its opening and closing properly, be sure your vaccum advance is properly set and your choke thermostadt is in good working order, Unless im mistaken your secondarys/passing gear. has a cooling line to the transmission"automatic"..".I could be mistaken on that " but it's a lot easier to check the common things first before changing any settings and getting a real headache,
Just my 2 cents
Sherry:)

Is the "bog" coming as you step into the throttle or is it coming after you've been at wide open for a second or two?

scooter76 very good link thanks, what I do was check the plugs first, they where a bit black, so I cleaned them and rinstalled them, from there I adjusted the carb to where I felt the engine revd the best, then I went to the timing and bumped it 4 dergrees, and wow, what a difference, I haven't had a chance to take it out, but I can nail it in neutral and it will quickly rev, with not problems, it sounds very strong, before it was very mushy.. HIB H.. it with stumble slight when i would apply about 3/4 trottle and it would bog immiediatley when I had it wo.. I started buffing the car, so I didn't take it out yet

The only way to tell for sure is a road test. The engine needs to be under a load to see if there is any bogging etc. when the secondary side is opened up.
From what you describe, you seem to be on the right track. Good luck!
