Im planning on replacing the carpet in my 90 coupe and just have a few questions. Whats the difference in mass backing or poly backing? Is it worth the $100 dollars more for the mass backing? Is there a certain glue I should use or somthing else? Also is it easy to replace all the carpet or am I biting off more then I can chew? Thanks in advance!

I just replaced the carpeting in my Grand Sport and was told to order the kind with mass backing...really don't know why, but I didn't ask questions! I know the guy who did the work for me (and who is a real expert in all Corvette work!) had a hell of a time just removing the original carpet. I'll see what else he has to say about the whole job.

I replaced the carpet in my '86 last winter. It is an envolved project but worth the effort. I used the mass backing as it is the same as the original. I have not seen the poly backing but I understand that the mass is thicker and provides more sound deadening.

Sorry for the late reply, as i was out of town. Is there a certain clue I should use for best results?

It took me several days to replace my carpet, but I took my time. Yes it's an involved project that requires the removal of nearly everything in your interior but the dashboard. You'll have to do some cutting, and gluing, but it's worth it in the end. I used mass back too, but the carpet I got from (cough)ACC(cough) has wrinkled in the rear deck. It's all wavy and bumpy, I'm quite surprised that it has done this, since the stock carpet never did it. I won't buy that brand again.

The only gluing I had to do was on the transmission tunnel plastic forms ( sorry I don’t know what they are called). I have not replaced the carpet on the door panels yet as it was in pretty good shape and I decided to wait until I redo the door panels themselves and I haven’t replaced the carpet on the lower part of the dash either as it is in good shape.

I had a terrible time getting the old glue off of the plastic parts. It seemed to be some sort of stretchy, still flexible after 19 years, butyl beads. I asked a local upholstery shop, that sells supplies to the public, if they had any and they told me they do not use it. They said they always use contact cement for that application. I used 3M spray contact cement called “Super Trim Adhesive” and it has worked just fine.
