cd player enlightenment

Guys, back down. Everyone is here to help and comments like "idiots" are not helpful. Have a little more respect for one another please.

robertee4; the C5 with the stock Bose head unit will operate a remote mounted CD changer. Problem is that the signaling between the factory head unit and CD changer is a proprietary interface. Other than the factory changer, there is only one aftermarket changer that can be controlled by the factory head unit - and neither have any read-ahead optimization (nor will they play MP3 music files either).

Luckily, PIE makes two adapters that can help broaden your choices. One is called a "signal converter". It acts as a translator between the factory head unit and an incompatible CD changer. This allows you to control a few additional models of CD changers. The PIE part number is PIE GM10/PC-KNW . It converts the signal/control language of the factory setup over to what the aftermarket CD changer can understand.

The other adapter PIE sells allows the interfacing af any aftermarket audio device that has L/R RCA type outputs. The device adds an aux input to your existing head unit and allows playback through the factory system. With this unit though, you cannot control the functions of the external source; so you would need to mount a remote control head somewhere up front. This PIE part number for this device is PIE GM10-AUX .

There are many sources online for the PIE adapters - I personally used:
http://www.litewarehouse.com/catalog/index.php and
http://www.logjamelectronics.com

As long as your factory head unit has a button labled "AUX" somewhere on it, you can use either adapter.

As for the effects on your factory stereos warranty; I guess a case could be made by the dealer that ANY radio problem you have in the future could be blamed (even falsely blamed) on the external adapter and changer. So you could run the risk of losing the warranty on your car radio should a snotty dealer decide to casually blame it for any car radio problems. But that would only affect the warranty on the factory head unit... not the engine, transmission, power window motors.... I think you know what I mean here.

I am using the PIE GM10-AUX to allow my MP3 hard drive unit to play through the factory Bose head unit. And I mounted a remote head from the MP3 player in the center console.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new tunes.

---------------

BTW; here is the hard drive MP3 player I installed in my 2002 - it plays through the factory system using the PIE AUX10 adapter:
