Center console armrest/door coming loose

Has anyone had any problems with their center console door pulling off the screws from the funky 2-way hinge? The outermost screw is stripped and the second screw one is pulling out. My car is still under warranty; think it may be covered?

Craig,
I haven't experienced that problem myself, but from the way you describe it, it sounds like it could be caused by having the center console filled with too much stuff for the lid to close properly. Those center consoles aren't very deep, and don't have room for a whole lot of stuff. If the screws are coming loose, it may be that it's because the lid was being forced down over more items than the space can really hold. I'm assuming since your Z06 is an '03 and you've only had it a short time, you purchased it used (as I did with mine). It sounds like the previous owner may have been the one to stuff the center console.

I agree that you should ask the dealer if it's covered under warranty. Good luck!

Yes Patrick, your assumption is correct. I purchased my 2003 with 9444 miles on it. Actually I am the third owner. The console cavity is very shallow. It's possible that it was overfilled, but I still wonder if it is the hinge design as it is truly difficult to opene it up all the way vertical. I will check with the dealer. In the meantime, I hope others can post their opinions as well.

Craig,

About a year ago, mine was starting to get very difficult to open and it felt like the hinges were wigging out (can't think of a better term for it this early in the am). It would open a little, then you had to really wrench it to get it to open the rest of the way.

I had the car in for some other little things and got the dealer to take care of it before any damage was done. I can't remember what they did, but I suggest you get them to take a look at it.

And no, I didn't stuff too many things in there :L

Craig..I have a 02 Z06 and my center console door got to the point that it was almost impossable to open. Brought it to the dealer and they replaced the console door and hinge under warrenty.

I took mine to the dealer for warranty repairs (see thread http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59351 ) and the only thing they did was to oil it up alot. Works good now. Perhaps I can get mine replaced before the warranty runs out.

I noticed this right after delivery when the car was brand new. I put a drop of oil on each pivot and it has been working fine for 1 1/2 years without a problem.

The console door is easier to open up all the way if the parking brake is disengaged. If it is engaged, the door has a tendancy to hit against the handle.

Very True. Yesterday, I removed the console door in order to install a two-tone leather console cover and discovered that two of the four threaded plastic studs (for tightening the console down) were broken off. I used some of that gel super glue. I will reinstall the cover this week to see if it holds. In my case, it looks like the problem was worstened because the two screws closest to the front were basically not holding the cover to the hinge.

Yup! Exactly what I did too. "NiceWork" :beer
