Changing the Ignition Lock Cylinder???

I’m trying to get at my ignition lock cylinder to replace it but it requires a tool to lock the telescopic column in order to get the retainer off to remove the lock plate to gain access to the screw holding the ignition lock cylinder in. Does anyone know what the tool is or what can be used in place of the tool? Thanks!

I've done that job before and don;t recall having to get anything special. I could be wrong, but it seems like I was able to secure the column with common tools or garage items.

The hardest part was threading the wire down thru the column with everything else in there.

The problem is if you haven’t any way to lock down the telescopic shaft to prevent it from extending, the tines on the compressing tool are not long enough to reach the lock plate.

wish I could remember what I did. I'm positive that I used whatever was in the garage at the time, just can;t tell you what.
can it be held down by way of a wire or bungee cord? I know I came up with something simple...

I figured it out. In order to lock the telescoping shaft (the short one) from telescoping, apparently there is a tool but I could not find one. I figured out that just the right size bolt that will fit inside the center hole in the shaft, when you tighten the compressing tool the bolt will push against a rod that is inside the shaft which rocks a half moon key in the bottom of the shaft against the side wall of the parent shaft that locks it in place.

Never the less I was able to replace the ignition cylinder
and as I suspected the Vats wires where cut inside the column and it had a regular ignition cylinder in it (non Vats).
