Checking Wheel Bearings

Hi! In my on-going search for a car, I am going to be checking out an '89 in the next several days and was wondering whether anyone had any good tips on how to check the condition of the front and rear wheel bearings. I will be able to put the car on a lift, and I am familiar how to do these tests on a C3, but would like some advice on how one checks these out on a C4.

Thanks!

I have always lifted the car and tried to pull and push the wheels in line with the halfshafts. Then try lift the wheel up and pull down to check for any excess movement or noise.
