Any idea my choke won't disengage, the engine stays in high idle and the choke light remains on when the engine is warm. Thanks for any help.

Schweng,

When I dropped my Q-Jet at a local carburetor shop, I informed them that besides my suspicions on the fuel mixture solenoid, the choke would stay on even after reaching warm-up.

The shop guy told me that besides the obvious malfunctions on chokes (i.e. the heated bi-metallic spring breaking), another cause could be a worn throttle plate shaft/journal. Apparently, when worn, the shaft orbits or wobbles, and the choke does not disengage like it's designed. The journal would be the part of the body where the shaft rides/spins. I had to pay about $22 to have him ream the journal and install a bushing that would bring it to within tolerance.

Also, check to see if the electric choke wire (coming directly off the choke) is frayed, or cut somewhere.

Hello Schweng,

Most of the options are already said so i don't have anything to add to that.
But this i find very interesting:
and the choke light remains on when the engine is warm.

I have a late 81 and the still is room for the choke light in the tacho metre. But in the wiringconnector at the back of the tacho and mph panel the choke light wire's aren't there. I want to reconnect the choke light but know i see your 81 still has it :)

Greetings Peter.

Fuse?

Is there a fuse for the electric choke solenoid? Worth checking !

Thanks Mike, that's a great thought. I did just have the center console all taken apart and the choke was not acting up before that.

fuse

That being the case (console apart) I would start there. If you have the shop manual it should help tracing the wires thru the console to see before you tear it back down. First thing I would do is check all the fuses though. The choke power may be thru another fuse, may/may not be labeled "choke" on the fuse panel.

That was it Mike, the relay on the drivers side of the console got disconnected. Plugged it back in and solved the issue. Thanks a bunch!
