While washing and waxing my baby today, I noticed that there were a few clear flakes on my front bumper below the license plate cover and front air screens. I'm guessing this is the clear coat flaking up from road crap hitting it? Is there anything I can put on it to stop it from getting bigger/ fix it?;shrug
This sucks :(
Thanks for any ideas

Chris

Were they actually flakes of clear laying there or are you talking about chips "in" the clear? If the clear is flaking off it will need to be repainted.

Clear coat will rearly flake off, it may chip but not flake. What you are describing sounds like teflon coting that was improperly appliedor is simply fading and pealing with age. Post a picture, that will help to determine what is hapening.

Nope they are definetly flakes, I was afraid of that:cry. This only seemed to happen after driving up to dallas. I didn't notice them the other day when I was out there with the detailing spray, and it didn't sound like I was getting pelted with rocks or anything on the drive. what a pain in the ass. Is there anything I can do to temporarily stop the flaking from radiating out?

Thanks
Chris

Did you buy the car new? Was there any sign of front end repairs?

My Volvo wagon had a respray on the front and the paint is flaking off. It was painted in 99' and the front grill area is now down to primer with the original paint under it .... the clear and the color both were flaking.

Shop where it was done named the brand they had problems with (paint/clear), I forget what it was though.

Unfortunately, besides not driving it, no. When clear starts flaking off a bumper cover that means 99.9% of the time the cover was repainted and not prepped correctly. I work at a body shop and I get bumpers that are flaking and the prep work was so bad from whoever the hack was who painted it before that I can blow off all the paint with a air jet.

Here's some pics...sorry about the quality, it's as good as I could get it. The one of the license plate cover probably shows the flaking the best in the lower left corner of it. If you can't make anything out, let me know and I'll give it another whirl.

65-to-00. I got the car a few months ago, I'm the 2nd owner. Some lady backed into him a while back, but I'm pretty sure he said they just ended up replacing the whole thing, but who knows. I do have all his old records so I'll go look at those and let you guys know for sure.

Yep...improper prep job before painting by last quack painter...came back to bite YOU in the azz...have it resanded and painted the right way...sory fella:beer

Well, I looked through the records and of course there isn't anything from the body shop he went to:mad all I've got is his insurance claim for the paint...nothing else about body work or anything. go figure.
Anyone have an idea about how much it's going to set me back to get the front bumper redone?

thanks for all the help

I broke my front bumper cover and had to have the whole thing replaced. A cat ran out in front of me on a highway. I hit him about 50-60MPH. In believe that the claim was for 1000-1200 dollars for a new cover, paint, and installation.

Now comes the dilema. You have an essentially good cover, but it would have to be taken down to the base.

Look at the labor costs versus replacement of the cover and the quality of the job if they take it down.

Of course, how long are you going to keep the car?

I plan on keeping it until the engine can't give me anymore, and then I'll probably just drop in the ls19 or whatever is out by then and keep on going. Looks like I'm headed to the body shop. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.

thanks
chris
