1989 DARK MET. BLUE COUPE
HI, I HAVE A 1989 CORVETTE COUPE WITH A 6 SEED MANUAL.THE CLICK SEEMS TO BE COMING FROM AROUND THE REAR WHEELS BUT ONLY FOR A FEW SECONDS WHILE TAKING OFF FROM FIRST AND REV. CLICK,CLICK,CLICK ;shrug. THEN CLICK GOES AWAY UNTIL I STOP AND TAKE OFF AGAIN.IVE HAD THE CAR ON JACKSTANDS WITH TIRES OFF AND WENT FROM FIRST AND REV AT NORMAL TAKE OFFF ACCELERATION IT BUT NO CLICK PLEASE HELP, THAT NOISE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY:W

Hi, My 88 makes the exact same click, but only when it sits, normal driving I don't hear it. I hear the click Rev to First when I pull it out of the garage. I hope someone chimes in. I read to remove hub, clean splines, anti-seize splines, torque to specs. Anyboby?????

Its weird becuse once in a while i can get going without clicks but not often

its either bad wheel bearings or a u-joint. It its a U-joint it will make a clanging noise or give a feel of sloppyness when shifted from dr to rev or vs versa. Remember, you have 6 U-joints to deal with...
Never run the drive train off the ground. That causes damage. The drive train needs drag on all its parts.

Check wheel bearings by jacking, grab wheel at 12:00 & 6:00 and try to wiggle. IF there is ANY noticable wiggle, its too much. If you can SEE the wheel movement, its more an emergency. These wheels can fall off.

Considering the above is not the problem: and you think the rear-end is in question. You could be looking at a problem with the clutches. Mine clicks all the time, i'll probably rebuild the entire unit in 40k miles or ~200,000 total mileage.

Thanx i it feels pretty normal when shifting from 1st to rev. But the wheel bearing are something i will definitely look into. My buddy also said something about a teflon washer between the spindal and wheel bearing assembly.

try something simple first. Change the lub in the rear end and see if that helps.

whats a lub or do u mean hub assmbly? Do you have to remove half shaft and spindle to remove hub? The head on the torx bolts on my hub seem to be on the inside of the knuckle buried by yoke.

My 84' did this and it turned out to be a loose Hub Castle Nut . They need to be torqued to like 150 Ft. Lbs.

Cured it.

Place the trans in D. Slightly step on the gas. Place the trans in R. Slightly load the throttle so you snap the U-joints to make out some clicking noise. This is to eliminate a U-joint where the wheel does not turn 360°; meaning, slapping the shift lever back and forth to cause the U-J to speak up. Then, you go looking for wheel bearing hub noise next on the :W wheel moving full circles for bearing noise now.

U joints

I would bet that your driver side half shaft joints are bad. I had the same problem and so I put the car on jack stands and then put a wrench on a lug nut with car in park (In the case of a manual put in gear) I was able to rock the wheel back and forth (front to back). If it were the wheel bearing you would be able to grab the wheel (In the 12 and 6 position) and feel it move in and out. The other thing that can cause the noise is the bushings for the bolt that holds the spring.

My buddy also said something about a teflon washer between the spindal and wheel bearing assembly.

If you only hear the noise occasionally or for one or two clicks, the teflon washer is usually the culprit.

That's what my 88 does.....Anyone have a schematic/exploded veiw of that area?????

Thanks Junk, Man that was ugly:puke
You ask for a Exploded view!!;LOL
I don't know what Teflon washer he's talking about,I've never seen one with a Teflon washer,Besides I'm purdy sure a Teflon washer would split at 160 Ft Lb's of Torque!!;shrug

(FYI)That one was only clicking every once in a while just taking off and backing up!!:thumb
