This code comes up every 4 days, dealer says they can find nothing wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

GulfTango,
Since you're saying its a Traction Control issue, can we assume you went through the process stated in THIS THREAD to pull codes, and the active code was C 1286? Also, did it have an H after the number?

If the answer is that it's a current code (rather than a history code), and it is C 1286, that translates as "Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction." C4C5Specialist can tell you far more about this than I can, but it sounds to me like your steering may be having some sort of issue communicating with the program control module when it comes to properly calibrating "straight ahead" between the direction your wheels are pointing, and the direction the car is actually moving.

Hang on- C4C5 should find this post soon.

I also have been receiving an intermmittent service traction control, abs,
active handling message in my car lately. When I pulled the codes from
the DIC I got a C1214h. Since I don't know what a sol valve relay contact
or coil ckt open is and I don't where to find it I guess it's off to the dealer
for me.
:W :hb
But I have a question, when I start the car and the service message is
there I guess that is a active code but when I restart the car and the
message goes away does that make that code a history code?

LEN,
I believe the only thing that makes it a "history code" is when it is reset. Mine does the same thing, I think that is built in so you can use the dice, after you have acknowledged the first service code message.

I believe a history code can be a record of a transient condition. For example, I had an oxygen sensor that went bad over time. It would set the check engine light and show a history code. It would reset itself after so many ignition cycles (10?), but show as a history code, even though I never reset it and the check engine light was lit. I could reset it manually with the DIC. When my active handling/ABS unit failed, it set a current code and never became a history code. I think the difference is that a historical code recorded a past condition that is now within normal limits, while a current code shows just that.

Here is another great walk through on where the grounds are located.

Nice link c5y2k. About 8 mos. ago I would be driving down the highway and all hell would break loose with codes like service active handling messages etc. The car would eventually go into reduced engine power. I found that it was the grounds behind the headlights causing the problem. They were corroded. I wire brushed and cleaned the grounds and never saw another code. On a C1286 because of it's location, I would pull the plug on the steering sensor first and check the condition of the contacts as well as all the chassis grounds. c4c5specialist can probably let us know what kind of voltage we should be seeing also. Maybe he will chime in.

Some very good information

I have set a book mark and will probably copy and put into a Word document and archive it for later reference.

Thanks to all who made this contribution.
