Code 36 - Mass Air Burnoff Relay

I've been getting code 36 - Mass Air Burnoff Relay errors for the last
several weeks on my '89. It's not constant but very frequent. The FSM
says that if not constant then not a serious problem.
However ... I've also noticed that since this began the average mpg has risen from 15.5 to 17.5 !! WTF?? I haven't changed my driving, still heavy on the pedal every chance I get.
Anyone else have a like experience ?
Anyone can comment on code 36 and its ramifications ?
TIA

maf relay

i replaced the maf relay for the run mode but not the burnoff mode . the relay was $14.00 at autozone . dont know how much the burnoff is but i would think its about the same . not too bad a price unless there is something else that may be a problem. good luck .....mike

I was told the two relays are identical, so you could swap the leads to them and see if your problem goes away (and mileage drops :) ).

Maybe the warmer weather is helping.
