am getting code 53 "over charging" and have seen the guage pop up and show 16.5 some times but not often. so is it the alternator or voltage regulator or should I just run down to the "Zone" and have them check it out. 1985 coupe

It can be your cluster is failing. That's it if your alternator checks good. There is a I/C in your that fails.

I would go to the Zone and have them check it out....BUT make sure the people that are checking it out know what they are doing..

I would say that the voltage regulator is going bad. Although an intermitent short somewhere could cause the regulator to think it needs to supply higher voltage. Your biggest problem is going to be finding something that is intermitent. good luck .

Merry Christmas :w

Straight from the shop manual:

Code 53
System Over Voltage

This code indicates there is a basic generator problem.
- code 53 will set if voltage at ECM terminal B2 is greater than 17.1 volts for 2 seconds.

-check and repair charging system

Hope that helps,

Craig

Have you actually used a meter to see what the alternator is charging?
