Codes: How To Retrieve??

How does one retrieve codes to troubleshoot engine problems? Is there
special equipment needed, etc.? In my case for a '94 LT1. TIA.

IMO best way is w/OBD1 capable scanner and FSM for further diagnostics or with key off short pins 4 and 12 together turn ignition on (do not start ) PCM will be module #4 codes should flash in speedo.
