Hi Everyone,

I have an '88 Vette (which I love) and I received a really large book about '50 Years fo Corvettes' for Christmas. When I reached the section concerning C4s, one paragraph indicated that the '84 was rated at 205hp but that those in the know are aware that "it is more like 350hp under competition tune."

Is this so? What is a competition tune?

Thanks,

J

"Competition tune" is a rather vague description of how the engine was prepped. It usually involves dialing-in the cam timing and adjusting for optimum fuel mixture and ignition timing, but sometimes will involve (as in the case of the Corvette Challenge racers) blueprinted and balanced engine assemblies. It is also desirable for best possible power and torque, to utilize exhaust pipe configuration for tuning purposes. All of these methods are legal for production stock car racing.

I hope this helps you some. :upthumbs

Thanks for the reply. The book seemed to indicate that it was more tuning than Blueprint and Balance. That is what had my interest. Thanks for clarifying the issue.

Bonnell, I have an 84 CF with some minor mods, you know the usual trinkets exhaust, chip, underdrive pulleys, 1.6/1 roller rockers, etc. I believe you will never see 350 hp out of the CF without doing some serious mods to the intake system i.e. X-Ram convert to carb etc. The intake is the week link in the chain, it just dosen't breath well enough stock to develop 350 hp. Check with the CF gurus on the CF forum. They will know. I solved my need for speed by purchasing the ZR-1, gave the 84 to the wife. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

Thanks for the reply. That is about what I expected to hear. I really enjoy my '88 but I look forward to the day when I can give it to my son and get a C5.

Yeah I bet your son looks forward to that day more than you.

C4 To C5

You would be right except that I wouldn't even think about telling him about it.

I'd never get any peace! :)
