I know this is an old topic but I found something interesting....

I was searching the internet for final info about how many Corvettes were destroyed in the Cash for Clunkers program. Between the internet search and searching on different forums through old threads I found different totals. Does anyone know what the correct info is? 243? 131? 123? Corvettes destroyed????

An internet result said 243 Corvettes were destroyed, and that site provided a chart.
Model Year # of Clunkers Low Value
1984 12 $6,000
1985 91 $6,000
1986 66 $4,250
1987 63 $5,100
1988 6 $8,500
1989 5 $8,000
---------------------------------------------------

Autoweek reported that 131 '84 to '95 vettes were turned in for cash for clunkers.

-----------------------------------------------------
Car and Driver reports that among the cars traded in on the "Cash for Clunkers" program, 123 were Corvettes from 1984 to 1995.

Here are the government's numbers on corvettes which were used for trade ins in the cash for clunkers program. Below are all the corvettes by year. Every corvette traded in under this program except 20 was a 1980s model. RIP 123 C4s who contributed to helping our economy.

I wonder how many were still good, decent cars that people (without a soul) simply bailed on due to the sudden decrease in book value from a crappy economy? From a numbers perspective, I can see jumping out of a car when someone offers you 3 or 4 times what the book value is...

I'm certain there were some clunkers....I've seen some horribly abused Vettes in my life. Owners that should have been whipped for what they did to such a fine machine..

Some people just have no respect for the propery of others, or even their own. There was a time when a Corvette chassis never went to the crusher...someone always took it and rebuilt it and gave it life again. It was a privilege to have a Corvette.
To me, this describes the single biggest issue with our social evolution......people have been taught that everything is "throw away" and carries a dollar value. Even class and self respect.

I wonder what the ricer/ratio was?

How many ricer racers opposed to Corvettes? Had to be 1000 to 1........or more. Since they have ZERO value when they get a little tore up or older.

I agree Boomdriver. What did they get for their Corvette a Corolla, wow what a deal. :eyerole

There was some nice other machinery traded in as well. Aston Martins, RX-7's, etc...I mean really rare stuff. Sad, and just wrong.

Heck, where I worked at the time abut 75% where junk for the most part. The other 25% still had tons of life left. The two saddest ones where a GMC Jimmy 01 had 43K on it, was perfect inside and out. Had to blow it up. Early 2000's Mercury Grand Margquie, 102K but a southern car, totally still very nice inside and out. Had to blow it up. I chopped off the exhuast before I did so, sounded good anyhow.

If the government really wanted to help people they should have taken those good "clunkers" and gave them to people who really needed a decent car, those that did not have any money to even think of a cash for clunkers kind of deal, but no we destroy a perfectly good car, leave it to the government. WTF is wrong with this country and some people? I mean really, is common sense really that dead? :mad

What a WASTE!

I agree Boomdriver. What did they get for their Corvette a Corolla, wow what a deal. :eyerole

I noticed that at least 3 people actually traded their Corevette for a KIA RIO!!! I freaking throw away car KIA was at one time giving away for FREE!!..:puke What a WASTE! For the price of the Rio, their Corevette could have been rebiult..

Trading in a corvette for $4,500 (wasn't that the maximum under cash for clunkers) is a sad.

I don't think that is 3 or 4 times the book value of any corvette.

Why did the government do that?
Because the government had just bailed out GM and Chrysler. They needed to sell cars in order to justify the expense.
