ok this is the story..im looking for a date coded block for my 64 coup...so i see in the tech section that 327's were 3782870 blocks and ive checked on the net for block numbers and i see there was a tall deck 427 for sale with the same numbers as the 327(3782870)...so my question is what other numbers do i have to look for on the block to know witch one is correct for a 64 vette...the cast dates i know but im talking about knowing how to tell if its a 427 or a 327?? and how do i tell witch h.p it came with if its a complete motor...thanks again

Not sure if I follow your question. You want the small block for your '64. The big block was not available in '64. How do you tell if it is a small block or a big block, the big block is much larger and about 200 lbs heavier. How do you tell long distance? You have to trust the seller (you have to trust him about the condition of the block) or have him send you pics of the block.

Not trying to be negative but not quite sure of the direction of your question :)

Uh, just my 2 cents, but if you have a 64, the frame will not accept a big block motor since it's missing some notches, I believe that's what I read in an earleir post. Also, you should be able to tell what type of motor it is by reading the engine codes on the stamp pad in the front right of the motor where the assembly date and vin number is also indicated. For instance, 65 396 would have code "IF", 66 427's "IL" "IM" "IQ" "IR""IP""IK" and so on.....Also the casting block for a 65 396 motor should have the casting date of 3855962, 66 427' should have 3869942 althought a few have been found with either 3855961 or 3855962, and lastly a 67 should have #38869942 (early) and 3916321 (late). Getting this from a restoration book. Check to see if it's even possible to put a big block in your 64 or sensible ($)!!. However, it seems that if your looking for a correct date coded block then you are trying to keep the car correct, if that's the case then you definitely need a 327 (since no big blocks were available in 64) in your car with the right date code, depending on what you vin # and assembly date of the car reflects (which you can tell by looking at you vin plate underneath the glove box).

thanks guys for the reply but you didnt understand my question right (its my fault)...what i wanted to say is that ive been searching on the net for a 327 (block id: 3782870) and i person told me he had a 3782870 block (870) but the block turned out to be a BBC 427 talk deck truck block...so what i am saying is that there is a 327 block id 3782870 and there is a 427 block id 3782870...and i got confused on how to tell witch is witch cause that man that had it didnt know the differance from small block and big block..so i just wanted to know what other markings i should ask the man or any other person a find out about the block...for the date code i know how to tell what im looking for but in my case when i find a block on the net and theres 2 differant blocks with the same id then its very strange,,,very strange that chevy made a small and big block with the same block id's for both.....thanks guys and sorry for the first post.....(helppppp i need a 327 dated coded first 6 months of 1964)... lol

Casting number 3782870 is a 327 small-block, and it's the only block that ever carried that number; the seller obviously needs glasses - no such thing as a 3782870 tall-deck 427 truck block (which nobody wants anyway). Try Engines Unlimited - they advertise in Vette Vues and have hundreds of blocks in stock.

Make sure you get a Flint block, as Tonawanda also cast and machined 3782870 small-blocks, but Tonawanda blocks weren't used in Corvettes; Flint blocks have a single-digit year code (Tonawanda used two digits for the year), and Flint blocks have a small square-head 1/8" NPT pipe plug just above the timing cover at 11 o'clock - Tonawanda blocks don't.

Don't buy any block unless it comes with a Magnaflux certificate or is guaranteed in writing to pass a Magnaflux inspection or you get your money back.

John,
The Mortec site, www.mortec.com , list a big block with the 3782870 number. They have it listed as:

3782870....427T......68-76...4-bolt

john thanks again for the info on the block...can you please tell me where i can find a phone number or somthing on "engines unlimited" cause i dont see anything on the net on them plus up here in canada we dont have any vette mags,,,thanks for the info about the "flint" block,,i didnt know that and now i do.....tom thanks for the mortec sight..i thought it was me that was seeing double but i guess there is 2 "870" blocks

What is your S/N

You should post your S/n you never know someone just might know where your orig. block is hiding.

The Mortec site is wrong, as are two printed references I have in my library that say the same thing (they must be copying each other) - 3782870 is a 327 small-block.

Call Randy at Engines Unlimited, (920) 685-0377, www.engineslimited.com .
