The coolant in my 77 needs some attention. It's been several years since it was changed out, though the mileage is low. Less than 10,000 miles. My question is this. Is it necessary to change the coolant when the mileage is low but you have exceeed the two or three year generally quoted time frames for changing it? Or can you replenish the anti-corrosives, etc. with an additive. The coolant still looks brand new.

It will always "look" brand-new, and its anti-freezing component doesn't deteriorate much, but the additive package (including the anti-corrosion elements) gets used up as it does its job; good idea to change it every 2-3 years if for no other reason than to maintain the strength of the anti-corrosion elements that protect the radiator and heater core.

I do a complete flush every two years. The pre-mixed 50:50 green. Not expensive. Cheap insurance.
