Thanks to you all and the wealth of information on this site, I have fixed the probem with the cooling fan on my '84. Unfortunately, I have blown both headgaskets, or have a valve/head problem because I have low compression in adjacent cylinders on both sides. It's not the pistons/rings.
There are several options when it comes to the fan switch, and what temperatures the fan switch closes. I bought a fan switch which turns the fan on at 215 and off at 194, DR137W. I got it from Schucks auto suppy for 19.99. I beleive it is a Nieoff product. Nieoff also sells the wire connector for the switch. The DR137X costs 35.99.
