A new problem has developed with my factory installed Delco CD changer. It plays discs, but with a lot of crackly distortion that overshadows the music. When I use my in-dash CD player, everything is fine and it plays perfectly. Any thoughts about what it could be?

I had the same exact problem on my 99 convert. and believe it or not it was due to the way I had burned the cd's. Are you playing copied cd's? If so, I had been using my older p3 with older cd burner that evidently was not burning a good copy. I used my new p4 laptop and burnt at the slowest speed and everything was perfect. For some reason the laser in the cd changer is not as good as the one in the dash. I verified this by trying the crackly cd's in the dash and they played fine, but not in the changer. After switching cd burners and slowing the burn speed it was good then and played fine in the changer and dash.

I had an assortment of home made and store purchased CDs in the magazine and all played with the same way. I thought it might be a fuse, but then, sound still comes through and old the CDs in the changer are effected. Thought I'd check here before I started pulling things apart.

Thanks for the feedback. Luckily, when doing a fusebox check, I came across a fuse for the stereo that wasn't fully seated in its slot. Problem solved. Now, I have a BOSE system that works perfectly and a huge stack of freshly cleaned CDs. Thanks again.

Cool! I'm having this same issue in my 2000 coupe. It seems "worser" :) on some discs than others, but does seem to be more pronounced on louder portions of music, esp. drumbeats. Was the fuse you reseated listed with an obvious label in your owner's manual (or did you not even look there)? Or do you remember which # fuse it was?

Thanks,
Fred

Off hand, I can't remember the specific fuse location, but if you access the fuse panel in the passenger foot well, and remove the cover, look for a fuse that's a little cocked or sticking out further than it "should" be. Your symptoms sound just like my experience; more pronounced distortion on louder portions of music and drumbeats fell apart all together.

Good luck.
