When the dash insert is properly aligned, are the red & blue bars and the CORVETTE word centered or slightly to the left of center?

Hey rich how bout a photo please

The pics you posted make it look like everything is offset to the left a bit. But hard to tell from the angle. I put a new insert on my 61 and it is offset to the left of center about 1/2 inch. Yet, the notches in the grab bar endcaps line up with the chrome piece on the top and bottom of the dash insert. If I center the CORVETTE and the bars, the right side overlaps the endcap instead of butting up against it. I just wanted to be sure I didn't get a defective insert.

Anyone else have pics or feedback on this?

I wish I could find a straight on pic of the package tray for you. I will look again. I thought I had one somewhere.

Here is a picture of the 61 dash. It is an original insert and I have had it out a couple of times. I adjusted it so that no marks showed from the chrome grab bar ends.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Ray. It does help. Looks like I need to play around with adjusting mine to better center it.

Larry,

That is one of those jobs where you need to be wide awake and in a good mood to tackle. :eyerole The upper and lower stainless surround pieces are crimped and usually tacked to the aluminum insert. The insert itself is very thin and can easily be dented or bent. As I recall I used a Dremel to carefully cut through the tack welds and then slowly pulled the surrounds off without changing their shape.

Getting them back on the new insert is where the patience really comes into play. You may find it easier to get them back on by making a wooden wedge and use that to slightly open up the groove a bit. Once in the proper position with the insert fully in the groove I used a padded pair of Vise Grips to crimp them down - very carefully so as not to bend them or touch the insert. I used epoxy to permanently bond them to the insert and strong elastic bands to hold them in place while the epoxy dried. This is one of those jobs where you would love to have an extra hand at times!

That worked for me but I'm sure there are many other approaches which would also work well. There are also places that do that restoration but I can't think of who they are off-hand.
