Have any of you noticed (and fixed) a rattle that seems to come from under the dash on the left side, perhaps a cable bundle that's loose? Any ideas?

Thanks, JCS44

Instrument Panel Squeaks and Rattles

On my 96 coupe I discovered the foam tape insulation strips that are attached to the A/C air distribution ducts were badly deteriorated. My car has 110K miles and has spent a lot of time in the hot summertime South Carolina sun. Everything is packaged so tightly behind the dash of a C4 that about 10 foam tape strips 2" x 4" are used to prevent plastic on plastic rubbing for squeak and rattle suppression. You can check for this by removing the top dash pad. There are two foam tape strips on the underside of the "cove" to insulate it from the top of the left side A/C duct. Heat probably accelerates the deterioration of this foam tape. If you car is frequently parked in the sun with the windows rolled up it is possible the foam tape has decomposed. A low mileage garage queen might not have this problem. I completely disassembled the instrument panel on my car to refurbish everything and replaced these strips when I was in there. Mine had turned to a gooey tar which was a real mess to clean up. I took my time and replaced various dash panels and parts including the top pad and it is as quiet as new now. I am very pleased with the results but the job was not for the faint of heart.

Regards, Greg
