decoding stuff

Need this stuff decoded please. i got the VIN and casting #(i think), but what do they mean?
VIN-1Z87L8S407182
Casting- 3970010

can someone help me out?
 
Its a 78 corvette.where did you find that casting#?On the cylinder head,block,etc....Get the series of numbers on the block in front of the right hand(passenger side) cylinder head.I will decode that engine for you.

3970010 casting # used for several years. IZ=Chevrolet Corvette 87=coupe L=base engine 8=78 S=St. Louis Assembly Plant 407182= Build sequence number. Chuck

it was behind the driverside cylinder head, right next to the dist.

i'll get that other # for you today.

That is the casting # and was very common, used on Vettes from 69 through 79 or 80 plus lots of other Chevy cars. Could be 2-bolt or 4-bolt mains.

The numbers off of the stamp pad (machined surface on block in front of passanger side head) will id the engine.

The "010" casting number is a 350 CI block. Could be 2 or 4 bolt mains. Chuck
