Distributor pick up

on 19b76 distributor how do i replace the module pick up? do i have to pull the distributor out. i have replaced the coil, module, capacitor.the only thing that is left is the pick up. Rex

Hi Rex,
Yes you have to remove the distributor. After you get it out remove the pin holding the gear on. Above the gear are two washers that will slide off, one is flat and one has tangs. Slide the mainshaft out of the housing. It may get stuck due to buildup so use lots of penetrating oil. In the center of the pick-up is a small wire retaining ring. Remove it with a small screwdriver and lift the pick-up off. Under the pick-up is a plastic cover on the housing. Under it are several pockets of grease. This is a heat barrier. Clean out the old grease and refill with wheel bearing grease. Put the cover back on, install new pick-up and put the shaft in. On the gear is a dimple just below the hole for the pin. Line up the dimple with the outer terminal of the rotor then put the pin back in. If you feel like driving to Garland on Sunday I'll be glad to go thru it for you.

Thanks Mike

Thanks Mike got the distributor out ,gear off ,pick up out, clip off ,old grease out. when I buy the new pick up will it come with a new plastic cover for the grease pockets, mine came apart when i lifted it out ,or can i just make one out of plastic? when i lifted the pick up out the wires were bare. would have taken your offer to come to garland but this is my driver, thanks again Rex.

Hi Rex,
The new pick-up won't come with a new plastic cover but they are easy to make.

Mike
