Is there a way to determine if my drive line clunk is coming from my drive shaft u-joint or the differential pinion gear. I put car on jacks and found the location of the noise. I just can not tell which of the two it is. It's 1989 auto with 47000 miles. It makes noise when I take up slack by just slapping gas pedal and letting off. It also does it when slowing down and transmission down shifts. Fairly loud. If it's pinion, what is my option?

Failing U's often will squeak, in addition to the the clunking that accompanies shifting (automatic) - my experience anyway...

D side U's also are first to go - again, my experience - one vette, 2 Jeep CJ's.
